I am with Allen, curious about the piston condition. Any pics of it?

I didn’t think it worked that well for scratches on the gel coat, but worked great getting scratches out of the window curtains and rear window.

looks like a ball bearing was slammin around til it finally got pushed out the exhaust valve.
The area can be recut to smooth the chamber, but you should have all 4 chambers done the same to keep compression even. -

Rollie,
I have a froze up 1600 dual port that I will tear down and rebuild to a 1641 for my TD. The 1600 uses a 85.5mm piston and 1641 uses a 87mm piston. You can go up to an 88mm piston without machining anything but I’m not sure about the new 88mm pistons today. Learning how to rebuild a VW engine is actually FUN. Really. I’d invest in two…[Read more] -

Do a search for “New Product” in this General Discussion forum. I think it was MikeNScarlet that ran a topic on Novus scratch remover. I’ve used it with good results. Pics in my gallery.

It’d be interesting to see the top of the piston that goes with that head. It’s possible that a small nut or screw fell through the throat of the carb and got into the cylinder. Too large of a diameter to be plug related. Should be reusable but you’ll have to do a little smoothing out where the cylinder barrel slips into the head. It appears…[Read more]

Thanks Ed, I guess that makes sense about the valve springs. I do intend to put the new heads on.

Ditto Oldbuzz: front springs will be carrying 300-400 lbs per side. (Here’s some general advice for how to measure for new coil-overs, and Here’s a chart to figure spring rates according to the angle of the shock mount–you’re looking at about a 45 degree angle there, so your spring rates will be about double the actual weight they’ll carry–so…[Read more]

Good luck, Roy.Doghouse coolers work better but for a stock engine the stock tins are just fine. I’ve got the old style case (vintage 1966, 1300, single relief) and who knows what cylinders and pistons. Pretty sure it’s the original shroud and tins, which would be non dog house (can’t really see back there to be sure). She’s cooling just fine, so…[Read more]

Thanks Scott, If he decides to take the offer, I’ll do just that. I am not really worried about the compression (if I can get her to fire and sound ok.). I do not intend to even remove the plugs or take compressions since I have 2 good heads and would intend to (at least) remove the pistons and put in new rings. First problem will likely to…[Read more]

Roy;
My 2 cents is 250 for a core is still to high.
Talk him in to letting you fire it up.check oil put in a battery, dribble some gas down the carb, hot wire it and short the starter if need be.If it runs and don’t make any ungodly noises then 250 I could live with.
I did a little looking B is 1600 sp late 69-to early 70, 57 horse.Ok so I was a bit…[Read more] -

Once the shock is off look very carfully for a possible part number or brand name.Coil-overs are a very common product these days.most are sold by length, spring rate, and eyelet size.Spring rate is determined mostly by weight of the vehicle, and my memory is failing but my vw based was around 600-800 on the front end.Places like summit,Jegs, and…[Read more]

Got the seller to agree to “think about” a $250 offer for a 1970 1600 sp engine with a “B” case. Very little rust, only cobwebs. I’m sure that it is all original. Complete engine. 035 distributor. Orig carb (even the “throttle positioner” and some other factory smog stuff which would go away immediately after purchase). This is the 1600…[Read more]

Hi John
Well I am a newbie also and can’t answer your question direct. I had a simlar problem finding a answer for the correct trailing arm for my 1970 VW MG TD and contacted rodney@airheadparts.com and sent him a couple of pictures and he gave me the info I needed plus he can get the part for me. Hope this helps. Maybe someone will know on t…[Read more] -

Thanks guys, You are right about seeing if the plugs will come out. I once bought a 4 cyl Mazda truck with about 45k miles. It logged 190k miles by the time I sold it. One of the plugs was original I didn’t dare take it out. The other 3 had been changed a few times. I’ve got a line on another 1500cc engine for $150 without a distr…[Read more]
