Yep.Only time you want to put an air-cooled VW Bug-based car on a trailer is if it has a broken axle or is missing wheels or tires or something. Short of that contingency, the $100 (or less) tow bar, plus a set of lights (if you don’t do what Wobby did and splice a trailer light hookup to your existing tail and running lights) will get you where…[Read more]

I bought my VW based TD about 500 miles from home. Without thinking I rented a tow dolly to bring her home. Talk about not using my noggin here, the tow dolly rental was more than the cost of a VW tow bar
. One of the 1st things I bought for my car was a tow bar and think its the easy way to go on these light VW based cars.

VW tow bar is the ticket. When I was playing with dub’s I towed them 500 plus miles no problems. You don’t even know the car is behind you.
I’m lookin for a trailer too, but only because mine is Ford powered and a automatic. I passed on one just before Christmas, I prob would have been enough 6×16 single axle only $600 (kickin myself now)…[Read more] -

Here is one more tip.
I have reaserched this dub stuff to death.I still am not sold on dubs.
However there is alot of little tricks with a rebuild on a vw.
case can be align bored for both crank and cam bearings,BUT only enough to clean the sadles up.crank and cam turned, agian just to clean them,Now this is where someone that knows what the H E…[Read more] -

AAAAh look in my photo album I brought mine home in the back of a pick-up it will fit.
However a tow-bar would be the quickest and more reasonably priced. And will store hanging on the garage wall or a corner in the basement.
You could also build your own that would fold up and take up less space than one of them fold up chairs that fit in a b…[Read more] -

Mark sounds like you well into your rebuild.
When I purcahsed my TD I had know idea about mechanics at all. Worked my whole life at a desk for a bank. Always want to try and work on cars but until I retired did not have the time.
Since I got my TD in July I have rebuilt my carb. which works great suprisingly, first time. Then purchased an ext…[Read more] -

oldbuzz,I absolutely agree. That’s why I the rebuild kit I am ordering includes a reconditioned OE German crank. This way, all the parts are made to fit by a single provider.Appreciate the guidance and duly noted. Thanks

In the back of your pick-up? That’s a good one.
Check the local papers in your area or if you’re still working, check around work. Might have someone who wants to get a larger trailer and be willing to sell theirs. That’s how I got mine. -

I’m looking into all ideals for taking my car on long trips, towbar, trailer, car dolly or in the back of my pickup truck.

Have the original crank turned. You will sleep better at night.A good german crank, allthough turned/rezised is far stronger and superior to the foriegn cranks on the market.
There is machinability designed in both the vw case and crank.ONLY take enough material off the case saddles and crank to put everthing back in round/spec.Cranks and…[Read more] -

I’d go to craigslist. But, remind me again, why do you want to put a VW-based car on a trailer instead of flat-towing it with a $100 towbar that works just as well and gives you a lighter package?

The engine is back in the machine shop this past week. The mechanic putting it together said he was not happy with some “sleeves” and took it back for reworking. The shop agreed to do the work at no additional cost.

Ed,I pondered that question for 2 days after my findings. I finally decided that, for simplicities sake, I’m going with a new crank.Matching over sized outside bearings after the case was line bored was all I wanted to deal with. Plus the cost of turning the crank ($50 to $75) and the extra trouble just didn’t seem worth it with the surplus of n…[Read more]

Good eye, mate! I guess a rebuildable motor isn’t nearly as good as a rebuilt motor, but like you said–you do have some usable parts there. And you obviously gots the skilz you need to get ‘er back together. So I have a tech question: New crank, or not? I ask because of the wear pattern on your mains. Do you under-turn the main bearing journals…[Read more]
