MGs of Baltimore club guys are cordial (they did use a photo I sent from the Rocks show in their November newsletter–pdf here), but they’re not overly friendly so far. I’ve not parked near enough to “real” MG guys at a show to test them like you did, but I suspect a few might be a little snooty. Understandable, since some of them have a lot of…[Read more]

It sounds like it.
My TD has the high beam indicator on the left headlight shell.
Forgive me for asking the obvious, but is it wired into the lighting circuit? -

I just read through the FiberFab manuals here on our web site.
The pedal cluster is relocated on the earlier FiberFab kits.
The adapters to add a second set of pedals, with extension rods to the original pedals was considered a poroduct enhancement and introduced with the MiGi II on May 1, 1979.
The revised approach eliminated cable shortening…[Read more] -

I Googled the Wabasto heater, but couldn’t find any information on cost, availability in the U.S. or how (or even whether) it could be used in a VW-powered vehicle like my Lafer.

Ah, at last now I understand.
Most kits, the pedals are relocated within the TD passenger compartment. I did not know FiberFab left the original pedal cluster in place and added a second set with connecting rods.
I’m sure it’s obvious, but you don’t want to come up through the floor pan.
If you go through the firewall, you will still have to be p…[Read more] -

You will find all types in the car hobby. Including the types you just described.
But for the most part, the people I’ve met through car related “stuff” are terrific people.
Don’t let the snobs discourage you.
But if you want to get back at the td-snobs, ask them what their ratio of drive-time to maintenance-time is. I bet you’ll get a lot more…[Read more] -

Not sure how the fiberfab body could be blocking access to the gas pedal. Can you show us a a picture?
The throttle cable comes out of the center tunnel and its cable housing to connect to a hook on the pedal assembly.
In this picture, right near the center tunnel, there is a vertical bar with a light colored roller at the top. On the tunnel side…[Read more] -

Allen you might call a Ron @ Sunshine Garage in Sarasota Florida. He moved my pedal cluster and all he works on are VW’s. He could tell you I am sure. His no. is 1-941-365-6684. Tell him I suggested you call him, his been a great guy to deal with.
Happy New Year, and hope to see you again in 2012. -

You will be doing more major reconstruction, with more potential for weakening the tunnel, then by simply cutting new holes.
More work, LOTSmore work, with a larger potential downside.
I recommend sticking with the tried and true.
I cannot explain the physics. But I learned a long time ago from an old-time carpenter, you can drill a round hole in…[Read more] -

At least we have some exposure on the web and people are finding us – including the spammers (LOL).

Sorry, I don’t know. I’ll try to take a close look at them to see if there is any information stamped on them.

Jack,The accelerator SHOULD be a solid piece of stainless steel cable. You get to it by disconnecting the cable from the gas pedal. To do that you will at least have to loosen the two bolts that hold the pedal cluster to the tunnel. Sometimes you end up having to unbolt the pedal cluster completely but usually not. Underneath the car, somewhere…[Read more]

The Update: The block is bolted and torqued with the cam shaft and lifters in place. Today the lifter seats had to be cut down because the cam was hitting the lifters and that would have been a short life if not corrected. No photos of this procedure, as it was done while I was at work and too dark to see without flashlights tonight when I got home.

Beware of used VW heater boxes. There is an asbestos gasket inside that compresses with time and allows exhaust gas to enter the car. It cannot be replaced. Granted, a TD isn’t as well sealed as a Type 1. But you still don’t want to breathe carbon monoxide.
The Wabasco heater is interesting. I had a 1960 Corvair with a gas heater. Turn the k…[Read more] -

Have you considered putting another chassis under the TD?
This one is too pretty to cover up.
Besides, an original VW slush box has to be the rarest transmission on the block. -
edward ericson replied to the topic upholstery progress in the forum My Project 13 years, 4 months ago
Sure thing, Roy. I have actually not got back to the new door panel job yet. I also long for a glove box & have plans to make one. FYI, the door pockets on the BCW, which don’t look anything like a TD’s pockets but are probably more functional, are simply flaps of vinyl folded and double-stitched all around, with elastic gathers in them. The…[Read more]
