Mrimd,
Might be easy to order a set of adjustable coilovers from JC Witney and give
that a try – if it dies not work the way you want send them back for a full
credit. It must be noted that I removed all the small leaves in the front of
mine so the ride is not harsh w/ the coilovers. -

At the end of the day, if the difference in cost is manageable, it’s obvious that covered is “safer” than open.
But seriously folks, if we were worried about road rash, how would we ever drive our little cars? I still think there is more exposure at ground level, driving the car, then there is on a transporter.
As far as flexing, my Duchess has…[Read more] -

True. New cars are shipped on open carriers. But Avantis are shipped in closed trailers because the flexible paint on fiberglass can’t stand up to as much abuse as today’s magic potions on steel. I’d think twice about exposing the old gelcoat on a TD replica to road rash on an open carrier.
Then again, if a top is available for your TD you co…[Read more] -

I went with as small a tank as I could to preserve some storage space in the trunk. I had it custom made by Boyd Welding in Ocala, Florida. They do have standard sizes but I opted for a custom size. They will build any design you need. They did an excellent job and I highly recommend them. I ordered it on Thursday the 1st and had it in my hands…[Read more]

Your only concern is not having a top to protect the interior. How much faith do you have in the weatherman?
The risk of road damage while the car is on a transporter is far less than the risk from simply driving the car. In fact, the “risk” is probably close to zero. If it was problematic, new cars would not be delivered to dealers on open car…[Read more] -

The top isn’t the issue. Damage to the paint, gelcoat, interior and windshield from sand, gravel and the assorted chunks of pavement kicked up by traffic is, not to mention rain, hail and bird poo.
Wrapping the car in a full cover sounds like a good idea until you consider how much abrasion will be caused by a flapping cover over how many miles? -
Bill Gould replied to the topic Steering wheel replacement in the forum MP Lafer 13 years, 7 months ago
Thanks, Ed, but my younger brother got all the woodworking genes in our family. A 17-inch wheel would be way too big for the Lafer, especially given my short legs and the cumulative effect of all those years drinking Lone Star, Shiner and Dos Equis (in other words, my beer gut gets in the way).

That’s the problem with ethanol blended fuels -dissolving the resin in fiberglass tanks. This has been a problem noted in the marine industry for years. You are lucky you didn’t have the tank come apart and seriously leak all over the place. Nice looking new aluminum one though. Could you have gotten one a little taller or longer for more…[Read more]

I wonder if I should be spending a few more hundred for an enclosed carrier, as opposed to an open carrier. There’s about a $400 to $500 dollar difference, but this car has no top to enclose it for the journey.

Yeah, saw those. The speedster guy who praised them said he had a good experience & they were low bid. But I don’t know if I’d use them with that many bad reviews.

I just looked up VLS LLC online and wow, they have a number of bad reviews, damaged cars and non delivery claims. A few good reviews, but not enough to sooth the bad ones. Thanks, anyway.

Have you tested the automatic transmission yet? Are rebuild parts available? It would defeat the purpose if it didn’t run after you reconnected the good parts.
This is going to be like a reality TV show only better. It’s real. -

Where did you buy that pretty tank, just in case other forum members have to replace their original tanks.

I think the cheapest and simplist way to go if you are looking for that is to buy another set of tires. Go back to the 145’s that were on there in the first place. Or go to a 165-45 or 50 series tire. Just a thought. Mid America Motorworks sells them.

There is one on the car but not sure of the condition. I have a new one to install but haven’t gotten to it yet. I’m having the wheels balanced on the car Friday which need to be done anyway. The guy feels sure it’s an our of round tire by the symptoms. We’ll see. I’ll try to swap out the dampner this weekend as well. Can’t hurt especially since I…[Read more]
