How very dissapointing. I love the car but I’m not stupid in love. But damn- I got bit by the bug BAD.
Thanks for your sage wisdom, everybody. I’m still gonna stay on the forums, probably lurking since I don’t even own a TD replica yet. But I just have to own one so I might as well familiarize myself with it now.
Again, thanks for helping out a…[Read more]

You don’t mention your level of skill or if you just want a driver.
If I wanted a re-do project and wasn’t in a hurry to drive, I wouldn’t go higher than $2,250 at the most.

Hi London. Welcome to the group.I’d go even further than Ed….I would pass on this car. It looks like it has LOTS of issues. There have been a few pretty nice TD replicas on ebay lately, in better condition, at better prices. And just for what it’s worth…maybe it’s an oversight that the dealer posted an incorrect engine picture. But the key…[Read more]

Even better than getting it early Allen…I don’t even subscribe to the paper OCW. I used to. But now I only receive their daily and FREE email newsletter.

In your TD replica, you are sitting in the back seat. And your footwell area is defined by the fiberglass TD body. Because of that, I believe stock VW floor mats will not fit. I have never compared the footwell to an original TD.

Hey, Paul, I spelled it right, anyway.I was thinking of the “amateur” part of the definition. You might recall my hilarious foray into frame head repair last winter. Real shop guys’ll look at that and bury their heads in their hands.

The motor in the pic is definitely not that MiGi.$2500, tops.A good running example is $3,500 to $4,500. So he’s priced on the high side for a car with few or no issues. This TD needs work. She will need engine work, maybe trans, brakes for sure. Tires, interior love, some re-building (windshield, etc.)Probably electrical and probably…[Read more]

Paul SOMEHOW you got your issue of Old Cars Weekly ahead of me. Must be you live closer to the publisher. I also liked the Tips section. Lots of good info to be gleaned there as well.

I did a terrible thing to mine and cut a rectangular hole in the carpet and padding into which I recessed an original MG TD rubber footwell.Perfect detail for the true TD fan. Looks absolutely authentic and even has the MG crest. Probably not real practical though.

Bentley is the best manual for VW chassis TDs. That and John Muir’s “How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive” book. Some other questions. Was the motor in the rear of the car? Any idea what year it is? How’s it registered? Lots of things to check on. Look in this forum under My Projects tab. In there you’ll see Manufacturer’s Comparisons. That’s also a…[Read more]

The windshield was definitely on backwards- the brackets for the side windows were facing outwards and would not rotate all the way where they would need to be. Forgot about the windshield wiper!
And I that’s definately not the motor I saw. It was a four cylinder, four speed VW. The gas pedal had to be pumped quite a few times before the car…[Read more]

Can’t say for sure about what motor is in it. Not even sure if the photo of the motor is the one that’s installed in the car. It’s definitely not an air-cooled VW motorr.
From what I can see…the windshield doesn’t appear to be on backwards but it’s missing a wiper. The right fender is missing the side view mirror and the left one is there. The…[Read more] -

Mark,
I completed a body off resto on my 74 Ghia and used POR-15 on the entire chassis, to include new floor pans, front beam, etc., the wheel wells, the underside of the engine bay, and inside the door panels. Stuff works great. Two cautions. One…when you apply the POR-15, make certain you don’t get the POR-15 on any bolt threads or studs b…[Read more] -

Yeah it’ll take a little getting used to remembering to go by the inner numbers. But it’ll be fun either way. I’m still in the building stage but at times can’t wait to be driving her. PATIENCE I keep telling myself.

You may not be aware that your speedo maybe in Kilometers but the inside dial is in MPH. Thru me for a curve until I took a closer look.
