  •  Hi Greg, Welcome to the forum. We are always glad to get new members . Good people and good info here.
The top frames for our cars are simply two pieces of pipe cut and bent to fit. A boat dealer can provide the fittings to attach them to the body and some dealers can make the top as well.

Thanks for the help.  I will upload pics as soon as I resize them to fit the posts.

  • Thanks Mike. Yeah, I think it might be the voltmeter in the dash, but it’s still much more likely that I screwed something up in the wiring. I’ll sniff it out eventually.

  • Ah, that changes all of our answers Mike.I have no experience with electric speedos. But having no knowledge never stopped me before!  The jumping needle sounds like loose wires or a bad ground. Like you said, check the wiring. The speedometer reading twice your speed sounds like you have a mismatch between the sending unit and the speedometer’s…[Read more]

i fooled with the cable some. couldnt get it out . i moved it aboua 1/2 inch in and out . helped with the needle jumping but still is about double the actual speed. its electric with a short cable running to the pickup just behind the steering damper and wires to the back of the speedometer. there is no extra terminal like on a tach so the only…[Read more]

  • A real rough guess of speed.  On both of my cars the speed is almost twice the RPM, ie: 2000rpm=40mph, 2500-50mph etc.  Allow a little to keep the gendarmes happy and motor on!  I had my wife follow me in another car to verify this.  Don’t know if all kits would work this way, but it is, after all, a Volkswagen in a pretty suit.  Except for my P…[Read more]

i would think that the voltmeter and multimeter should read the same thing, assuming the battery is connected and engine running at fast idle.if not , the voltmeter could be defective. take your battery to an auto parts store and get it checked free.better yet take the car .

  • Aaand . . . NOT the battery. Reads a sweet 14 volts after charge, but only on the multi-meter. The voltmeter in the dash still says 10.5. Stripped the wheels with a wire brush and painted ’em black. This is about my speed, technically speaking. The paint appears to be adhering.

Welcome aboard CH…I agree with Ed. If there are pins at the top corners of the windshield frame, it is very likely your car uses a reproduction MG roof.I’m not familiar with Modern Classic. I look forward to seeing pics of you car!

  • Mike,The cable could be catching inside it’s housing. That could happen for a couple reasons.I think the most likely reason is the housing is making bends on its way to your dash that are too sharp. Within the housing, the cable drags within the bend, which appears as a drop in speed on the speedometer. At the wheel end. the cable has continued…[Read more]

Most likely your speedo cable is giving up or it came loose on the back of the
speedo or the clip came off at the wheel. Sometimes you can squirt lube on
the cable ( between the cable and housing ) and get it to work if the two
    ends are OK.
If replacing – you will need a longer then regular cable from a bug because
you are sitting where the…[Read more]

my speedometer is jumpimg all over and reads about twice what it should.other guages are ok. can some of you guys with vw irs tell me what speed you are at ,say 2500 or3000 rpm ? my tach is ok so i may be able to judge my speed by the rpm. theres a trooper around here that will give his mama a ticket. thanks in advance.btw, got caught in the rain…[Read more]

  • Pins in the windshield sounds like the BCW style. Also the MG style. If you take your old top, and the car, to an auto upholstery and top shop they will make you a new one. Boat top guys have allegedly been used as well. Good luck. And please post photos. Use that “up arrow with tree” button at the right upper corner of the “Post Reply” window.…[Read more]

  • Thanks, Richard. Checked the gen. It’s OK. Belt’s tight enough & all. Looks like it’s the battery. I put some battery water in it and a slow charge overnight, hoping it’ll come back full. Works fine, meanwhile, despite the 10-volt reading. I must have a 6-v starter in there.

If the top has 3 bows it may be that you have a top based on a 1953 MGTD.  The tops for the earlier models wouldn’t fit as they were all 2 bow tops.  Many of the replicas used tops that were made specifically for them. MG Magic is a good source for some of them.  The cockpit was lengthened on many of the replicas, so a “real” MG top won’t fit.

  • Nice looking car.

  • Good luck, T. That’s a nice car. Don’t know how much more than about $5k you can get for it though. That’s just the market these days. Hope you prove an exception.

  • Welcome, nice looking car.

  • OK, my “52 MGTD is on Ebay at $4650 on the bid right now.  The reserve has been met so it will be sold tomm. evening at some price.  See the red one from Boone NC.  I’m definitely selling at a loss if the numbers don’t go up more.  Item #130516967603
