I’m fortunate that my Ford based kit is an Auto. In this car I’m glad it is a auto since there is not a lot of foot space for a clutch and a dead pedal. By the way this is my first ever Automatic and I’m no kid (60)

I’m not sure about Ford based cars, but on my Chevette based BCW, the shifter is built in to the rear extension of the transmission. Therefore the shifter location is determined by the placement [location] of the engine . I seem to remember hearing other Ford based owners complain of the shifter being too close to the seat, causing the dr…[Read more]

Thanks Dan — do you have pictures?
I use seat belts to hold me into position so I can control the car ( just as I did in aircraft) It does not likely help much in a teeth, hair and eye balls crash.

Agreeing with what was already posted, if the master cylinder is not “bench bled” first you could run into this problem. The collapsed hoses will also cause the problem.
Keep in mind that when most of these cars were built, the donor cars were lucky to get a decent clean up, let alone any new parts!
A couple VW based tips: 1)When buying…[Read more] -

/I personally don’t think belts on a vehicle like these serve any ,but a FALSE sense of security …Dan

Gary, Try loosening the brake lines where they connect to the master cylinder while having a helper press down the brake pedal. By doing this you will be bleeding just the MC ,not the entire system. Once you get fluid flowing to the lines you can then bleed the wheel cylinders .
I agree with Dale about the rubber hoses. Mine would let flui…[Read more] -

Gary,
PS
Sometimes you need to replace the rubber hoses as they collapse inside and
you can not tell from the outside. -
Dale Schumacher replied to the topic Master Cylinder ^68 VW in the forum VW Based Kits 15 years, 1 month ago
Gary,
I had the same problem w/ mine when I replaced. Two things – Could be
a bad unit as many overseas units are very poor – also did you put brake
fluid in the MC before you installed? Many times if you don’t it is a bear
to get the air out and get some pedal pressure.
Lastly – after spending a huge amount of time tying to get the system up…[Read more] -

Sounds like it’s the stock Chevette cable, but it may have been supplied with the gauge.
For stock cables:
I found a 61″ cable on http://www.rockauto.com by using Chevrolet/1986/Chevette/Body-Interior as the application look-up.
Dorman #03158 (61″) for the 4 speed manual and #03159 (80″) for the 5 speed manual and automatic.
ATP #Y814 (61″) for the 4…[Read more] - Load More
