  •  Ed, At our local cruise in last week, I was the lone foriegn representative, oops I forgot about the VW bug. But my car still  got  lots of attention  . A couple that appeared to be in their late 70’s and were owners of a TD back in the late 50’s really enjoyed looking my replica and were very accepting of the differences from the ori…[Read more]

  •  Ed ,  I love your wheel, It’s just that I could never enjoy it because my wife could never find out how much they cost and secrets are hard to keep.
Dan ,I think a tilt column could be fitted and would be nice when getting in and out, however after looking at the diagrams in the Chev. manual and seeing  what all is crammed [ carefully pos…[Read more]

  • Hi Dennis
The speedo was locked up which will twist off the cable. You can buy the cable inner part at most auto supply stores and cut to your required length. It comes with a little tool to crimp the end on and works great and saves you the work and expense of changing the whole thing (assuming that it’s still in good shape).
    Thanks

  •  Well ,,,now  that the stick is behind the wheel doe’s that make the wheel bigger ? it looks bigger  Larry,,, now that i did that, i will make a new stick end out of wood to match the rest of the knobs on the dash but i will just glue it. Mark would a tilt wheel work ?  if you could find one ,,I don’t think it would too hard to put in……..Dan

  • Mark and Larry, don’t be dissin’ that Big Wheel look! It looks more authentic, plus it promotes slimness in the hips and buttocks.
That said, I have a future sister in law who is rather substantially constructed, and she wedged herself behind Bridget’s wheel in less time than it took for me to say “sorry about the tight squeeze.” It all depends u…[Read more]

  • My plans for the car were indeed raising the steering column…my legs were trapped with the way it was. That’s why it was disconnected from it’s mounts when delivered.

  •  Pink MG ,, I told you we needed you expertice. Now do you see why?LOL   Two of us have little stubby turn signal levers when we could have had nice big wheels instead. Once again I took the cheap route.
Seriously ,I thought about it but would have had to raise the steering column to clear my legs and then the top of the wheel would have been too…[Read more]

  • You guys are brilliant…I would have installed a larger diameter steering wheel

  • Received the repaired speedo from Chuckles.  Excellant job of repair.  When installing it I found that the speedo cable was broken.  I don’t know if the cable helped cause the speedo problem, or if the speedo seized causing the cable problem.  MG Magic is sending a new one.  I guess that everyone might consider lubing both the speedo and the cabl…[Read more]

  • Type IV motor may not fit. You need to measure carefully. By the same token, there are adapter kits for Subaru flat fours, but again, they may not fit under your MG bodywork. But these cars weigh about 1900 pounds, give or take a few. You most likely do not need to go to something like Jake’s massive Type IV. He does build GREAT engines though! I…[Read more]

  • My idle problem came down to an air leak in the rubbers on the intake manifold. those two ruber seals you see on each side of the carb start the engine and spray wd 4 around seals if it accelerates you have a leak. I couldn’t tune it enouigh to compensate for it. I haven’t found tuning to be that finicky. 2.5 out of the little one 1.5 out of the…[Read more]

  • Jake Raby MassIVe Type IV fits best.Seriously, Lafers are VW Beetle based cars, just like our (VW-based) versions. What do you wish to achieve with a different engine?

  •  Dan, My ts lever stuck out to far also. I cut it off using a tubing cutter while holding it with vice grips to support it. I pulled the plastic knob off the metal stick only to find that the stick had two small fins that matched up with slots in the knob to keep it from slipping .I drilled a small hole in the side of the knob and put a set s…[Read more]

What engine is in it now?????? Dan

  • Does the carb have an electric ilde cut-off valve on the side of it? What carb is it?…30 PICT-3, 34 PICT-3 or 4?
This solenoid operated “valve” opens and closes the air orifice next to the throttle plate. Maybe it’s failed and that’s why it won’t idle.
Test by checking for an audible “click” when the key is turned on/off (courtesy of…[Read more]

Look under VW based kits, at the bottom of page one under carburetor ,scroll down and there is a link that gives detailed instruction on carb adjustment .

  • Will replied to the topic coil issue? in the forum VW Based Kits 15 years, 2 months ago

ok, well ive had 2 different carbs apart, cleaned, and adjusted. for now it appears to idle, and seems to be running smoother than it has been. once i get some insurance, ill try out a road test. still puzzled why the one newer carb will idle fine, and work fine as long as the throttle is constantly pumped. after 2 cleanings and all the passages…[Read more]

  • Set the idle?

  • Larry Murphy replied to the topic coil issue? in the forum VW Based Kits 15 years, 2 months ago

At this point ,based on the fact that it will run and run as long as the choke is half closed,I’m thinking the carb is at fault. Perhaps you missed a blocked passage when you cleaned it out..

  • Will replied to the topic coil issue? in the forum VW Based Kits 15 years, 2 months ago

with the throttle half way or anyway, and the choke half closed, itll run and run. as soon as the choke is opened, itll starve and die unless the throttle is pumped and the accelerator pump gives it the shot of fuel it needs.
