Did you jack the car up first? Where were the adjuster “plates” at when you started?
What is a “raise” style adjuster? The adjusters are usually raise or lower.
Once the snub nuts are removed, the torsion leaves are “free” to turn. Is something binding? -
Mark Hendrickson replied to the topic Front end weight – VW based TD in the forum General Discussion 17 years ago
With all due respect to the “ADD TONS of WEIGHT” method to fix these cars, that’s NOT the correct way to correct the problem. Front mounting of the battery and a storage area are GREAT ideas and well worth the effort.
However, you are asking for trouble adding lead or other ballast to compensate for the front end being too stiffly sprung.I’ve…[Read more] -

I consulted with two mechanics that had not worked on V.W.?s but their general experience was they had never encountered a problem grinding that lug down on any vehicle as long as no more than two thousands was removed.
I followed there instructions and it worked out correctly.

Phil,
Where are you at in VA? It would be nice to have someone else close by w/ a TD. I live in Stafford VA -
Dale Schumacher replied to the topic Front end weight – VW based TD in the forum General Discussion 17 years ago
Dave,
Make sure you have the battery up front. I also added a nice storage area up front and filled it w/ everything I need for a long trip – Jack, tools, replacement parts etc. It seems good now. Sometimes when I brake hard ( discs up front ) it slids, so maybe it still is a bit light.
Some people are using a area in the front of that storage and…[Read more] -

Hi Bill
I posted a thread here a couple days ago about the demise of the NJRC. It’s under “Clubs and Shows”
I wouldn’t blame the club’s demise on Dave Betts. When I was president, the club had already started to shrink drastically over the last couple years. No one would volunteer for anything and the events dwindled to one or two a year and only…[Read more] -

Gary, I’m no “spring” chicken either (bad pun).
You will be able to correct the ride height by using the correct free height and weight (rate) spring.
Here’s a no brainer to measure your suspension travel: Take a tie wrap and place it on the shock shaft (piston) as tight as possible. Then, while the car is sitting static at ride height on a le…[Read more] -

Pink, Thanks so much for the discussion on ride height, and the Eaton site. The ride on this Fiber Fab around Morehead City, N.C. is really stiff already so I am hesitant to cut the springs again so will contact Eaton. If you get a chance you can measure your spring. Since I am getting a little older now I remember back in the 50’s the hot ro…[Read more]

Welcome Gary
The Chevy based TD’s are Chevy Chevette, Pontiac T-1000 vehicles. Luckily, the front suspension used in the these cars were used in the Pontiac Fiero.
ALL of the TD replica producers were interested in using as much of the donor car as possible and were not really interested in handling and ride as long as it looked right. Hence we…[Read more] -

You should have warned me.
I was president from 2002-2006.
We just lost Wall Stadium and 2 of the 4 best cruise nights in Monmouth County. New Jersey has no paved oval racing anymore.
Hope it gets better! -

Yes
Thats the plan right now or I may head out west and catch a group of speedsters from the south and go up w/ them on the Thursday before. I do have the option to tow as well. A friend maybe going as well and he might follow in my tow car as a backup. Lots of options at this point. You have something in mind?

We have a very large cruise night on the last Friday of the month at a huge outlet center near Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ. The car club that runs the cruise, the Fossils, will only allow American cars that are 1975 and older.
I’ve seen some Anglia and Austin “gassers” there, but they would not allow my VW based TD in. I asked why…[Read more] -

Very sorry to hear
I always wished I belonged to such a club or had one around here, but no such thing. To bad people don’t realize it till it’s gone.
I joined a local car club – mostly all US muscle cars – they put up w/ me coming, but I think they wish it was a ” real car”. My only saving grace is the many US hot rods now made of fiberglass that…[Read more] -

These cars are finished the same way boats are. A fellow NJRC Club Member who has a VW based TD gave us all a tip…keep the finish in shape using products made for boats. You should see his bright red MGTD. It’s 25 yer old gel-coat and shines like a $10,000 paint job.
3M makes a bunch of gel-coat finish products that are available at any de…[Read more] - Load More
