These cars are finished the same way boats are. A fellow NJRC Club Member who has a VW based TD gave us all a tip…keep the finish in shape using products made for boats. You should see his bright red MGTD. It’s 25 yer old gel-coat and shines like a $10,000 paint job.

You have to use a cut polish.
First use a 1000 grit followed by a 2000 or 2500 grit.
Then put two or three coats of wax on it.

If the ball joints are the problem and you decide to replace them, be sure you buy German-made replacements. They cost a little more, but are wel worth it.
The VW aftermarket is inundated with Brazilian-made junk as you found out when you bought the new adjustable beam.

Thanks to both of you for the information.
Before starting the work the steering was loose to say the least. The ball joints were just barely staying in their sockets. I have already ordered a new steering box to reduce the play that I find there.

The problem you are experiencing is the BACKSPACE is WRONG…way too little!
I have a set of those 13″ chrome “basket” wire rims. I removed them. They were on the car when I bought it. They stuck out to far too (to little backspace). They weren’t event the right bolt pattern either! They were Chevy Vega bolt pattern, 4 x 4.25″. That converts to…[Read more] -

…First do what Keith said to do.
If that doesn’t fix it, to find what is binding, start at steering column. Disconnect it at the rag joint. Then turn the steering wheel. If it is “normal”, then you’ve eliminated that a the problem.

A dry steering box can do that.Make sure there is some lube in it,plain grease squeezes out and will let it run dry.It needs something like gear oil to lube it.Also,make sure the tie rods and the steering damper are not rubbing on the frame head anywhere.A frozen damper will do it too,but from what I have seen over the years when the damper goes…[Read more]

Depends on the kit, I am using 15″ toyota scion wheel they are 15″ and have the correct number of holes in them like the original td.
Have to make lugs to hold on the td hub caps.

Thanks for the info.
I’ll study more on how to mount the mirrors.
This windshield will also tilt forwards not that it will ever happen.
Once I have my wheels mounted and the new bumpers I’ll post the before and after pictures. -

That’s probably a better idea than drilling holes in the windshield frame channel.
My current “Pink MG” has an OEM MG-TD windshield, frame and mount. It can be folded flat (towards the radiator) as on the real TD’s.
It has a curved, slotted channel that the previous owner put a couple of Harley-Davidson mirrors on. They had threaded stems.…[Read more] -

I had also thought about making a set of tabs to insert into the frame and mount the mirrors to the tab -

Now you have enough weight on the front end to make the car steer
When the front end is too stiff, you get understeer (Push) and with the front end too soft you get oversteer (Loose).
Neat thing is that you can replace one or some of the secondary torsion leaves as required to stiffen it back up, but you probably only need the toe set properly.…[Read more] -

The ones on Bill’s “Angelica” are “rain gutter” clamp on style if they are the same ones that I put on the car.
There are allen snub screws that hold each mirror in place. Due to the design of the CMC windshield frame, I drilled two access holes in the inner part of the channel to get the allen wrench at the snub screws.Pink MG39519.6549652778 -

That is just what the person I purchased the car from said. I think the front was from the bottom of the stadium. The rear bumper is a stock V.W. bumper. What I am modifying to use as the bumpers is a 4′ set of pickup bed rails.

I finally buttoned everything up this afternoon and did take it around the block without and front shocks. Yes I can feel the difference in the ride and the braking with the front disc brakes.
