  • I would like to ask since the subject is going…My steering wheel has a plastic insert in the middle of a “FOX”…does anyone know what kind of wheel this would be ??
    Thanks,
    Paul

  • Thanks for all the information.
I spoke with the company that has done the powder coating of my engine tin and they feel sure they can give it the “brushed stainless” look. I like that option. In the mean time I have painted the chrome section red like the body color.
I have ordered the 8 spoke EMPI chorme wheels and I am thinking of having th…[Read more]

  • These steering wheels were all made by Grant. The adapter was the make of the donor steering column.
Grant has a plethora of wooden steering wheels and you could even get “banjo” steering wheels. All you need is $$

  • Mine had buttons to cover up the rivet heads, not pearl, but plastic.Yours is probably fancier. They were cracked with age so I never replaced them.I just used stainless bolts but the heads are recessed so they really are not seen. There are some silver and chrome powdercoats that look pretty good. The chrome looks like brushed stainless when…[Read more]

  • That is an ideal I haven’t considered. The wood is actually four pieces to the side.
I am currently having all new upper engine tin power coated the same color as the body.
Did your steering wheel have, what appears to be, pearl inserts at each rivet on the face side?

  • I have a dune buggy that had a rusty steering wheel,I drilled out the rivets, blasted it and painted it body color. You can have it powdercoated too.Does your wood come off in two peices? Top and bottom? Mine did so I bolted them back together with stainless machine screws.

  • I understan MG Magic is closed until March. I don’t find one on their price list.
I knew rechroming was expensive and that is why I was trying to locate one to purchase.
    I haven’t tried e-bay.
    Thanks

  • Poke around on ebay until you find what you have.Look under, vintage Volkswagen, sand rail, dune buggy, something will show up.Have you tried MG Magic? Is it held on with a ring of a half dozen bolts,or just three,or is it splined with just the big nut to hold it on?You can buy two or three steering wheels for the price of chrome now.

  • Thanks for the information.
The shocks I was sold by the local supplier are 3″ longer (collapsed) than the original shocks. I will return them to the supplier tomorrow. These are supposed to be the standard shock for the 1973 Beetle. They are thinking a shorter shock has been installed by the builder. They will try to match the size tomorrow.

  • Bill,
You could try what I did – order the adjustable coilover shocks from J C Whitney and try them first before you go farther – it worked for me. You can send them back and replace w/ the other type if it does not work out – give it a shot.
    Pink –
Is there any adjustment side to side on the front end ?- mine works great now that the one side is…[Read more]

  • Now I know why the ride height did not change. The replacement shocks are longer and are bottomed out. Looks like I have no choice but to purchase the adjustable axle and purchase the shocks from J.C. Whitney.

  • Pink MG.
    If I may please ask more questions;
I have completed the installation of new shocks, front disc brakes, and removing 4 small torsion springs from each beam. My ride height did not change. One thing that may have affected it is the shocks. I know you recommended the J.C. Whitney cheap oil filled shocks. I purchased shocks for a local…[Read more]

  • I agree with your statement. I haven’t taken the car of the jack stands yet but my gut feeling is that it will be to low.
I hadn’t noticed that the lower beam had been cut until I started reinstalling the wide torsion leaves. That is when I noticed the pinch bolt did not align correctly like the top pinch bolt did.
I have been trying to find a…[Read more]

  • Mr. Bill…In all likelihood, because your current beam has has the lower tube cut, your car may not sit right. Plus the suspension has been incorrectly loaded.
It is the center set screws alignment to each other that determines how much load is on each beams leaves. VW designed these parallet for a reason. Cutting one beam was a dangerous…[Read more]

  • Hey Dale,The TD.I’m pretty sure Al Merklin and Max Zimmer will be there. not sure about any of the other NJRC guys.Paul

  • Thanks Dale,
I did think to contact the place where I have been purchasing my parts and they instructed me basically the same way.
What they suggested was to use electrical tape and wrap the wide leaves about 1″ from the end. Then grind a bevel all the way around the bundle. I did and it worked.
I haven’t set the car back on the ground yet, I’m…[Read more]

  • Hi Ed,

I checked the size of my tires on my chevy based TD. They are P195 75/R14. I run the tire pressure at mfg recomdations. I also had a shake in my car upon the completed assembly. I found 2 things that helped. The tires on the car during assembly, though new, had flat spots from setting for extended periods. The other thing I found, the…[Read more]

  • Bill,
The way I did mine was to make sure the grub screw on the other side and middle was out than stack the bars the way they came out and use light wire to wrap them and keep them stacked – then just grease and install them as they came out – worked for me.
    Dale

  • Afternoon,
    Help!
Does anyone have a suggestion/hint on how to reinstall the 4 wide flat torsion sping bars into the front axle?
I can get three bars in but I have not been able to reinsert the 4th bar.
    Mr. Bill

  • Now I know how to use the scroll bar!!!
    Hey Frank,
There used to be a R/C Car Hobby Shop in Belleville, IL that a guy named Jim Smith and his wife Robin ran out of their garage. It was called Corner Hobby. It was off of east Main St, on the east side of Illinois St.
We raced at the Eagles Lodge facility in Shiloh, IL…indoor on carpet in the col…[Read more]
