Hey David, I appreciate your astute observations. I used 1/2 ” channel Aluminum stock, the ears are 1/2″ so you are just seeing optics from the angle. Yes the 3rd image was the original Duchess part that I used as a temple. I looked for 8 years to find an exact replica, before it occurred to me to just make a replica out of Aluminum channel…[Read more]

Paul. The Gas Tank Liner is shown in the CMC Assembly manual on page 48. It fits into the cutout for the gas tank and then the tank gets installed into the liner and body. The only purpose I can see for this is to prevent any fuel that leaks from the tank from entering the passenger compartment of the car. The body tub on my TDr does not allow the…[Read more]

Dave
Can see that you are starting from the aluminum channel on left and then fabbed the half of the hinge in second image. The ears of the fabbed piece appear to be of a higher profile than what you started with. Die you weld the aluminum ears or is it just optics? Assume the third image was the template of what you gabbing, correct. In fourth…[Read more] -

Your VIN is a VW VIN.
119219037 is a Type 1 (Beetle) built in September 1968.
VIN Decoder on the Samba at: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/bugchassisdating.php
Hard to beleive teh VIN is not stamped on your VW pan. The VIN isn’t really “between your seats.” It is further back on the VW pan, near the access plate for the shift rod to…[Read more]

Allen,
What problem are you trying to solve with a liner?
What kind of gas tank? VW?
FWIW… I’ve never seen a “liner” for a VW tank. And I’m not coming up with a pretty picture, trying to imagine how one would install it. I have seen POR15 used as a tank sealant, after the tank is properly cleaned.

Ed, I do not consider myself a good bodywork/paint guy. But, the best way to make up for lack of light and patience is to have NO paint. I need consistent uniform bright light with NO shadows. None – they’ll screw you up. You (I) can never ever make a paint job better by hurrying.

Allen: It’s all dupicolor stuff I bought at Advance Auto. The touch-up spray is an excellent match for this Ford Toreador Red. I also have some red scratch-filler primer.
The “adhesion promoter” is just that. On the rack with the rest of the paint. It’s mainly for painting vinyl or plastic trim pieces, chrome, aluminum, etc. You prep the part by…[Read more]

Ed, Don’t know if you are having any trouble but, a year ago when painting a fender, I had trouble getting a consistent spray out of the Duplicolor can. So, I decanted the spray cans into a small plastic (not foam) container using a drinking straw, let it sit for about 15 minutes and used the paint in my detail gun. Worked a treat. Now, somewh…[Read more]

Anyone in the GA or TN area heading to Bug-a-paluza April 8th and 9th? I won’t be driving Moneypenny but I’ll be there on Saturday the 8th. Looking for one rim for my spare tire. A used one in good shape will do fine.

Ed. Curious. Are you applying Duplicolor as a primer coat and color coat? And what is adhesion promoter and where do you get it? I ask because I have some areas that will need touch-up; front portion of fender in front of grille, passenger door and entire splash pan. Cutting to fit and adjusting takes its toll on a paint job, even on Ge…[Read more]

Will do, thanks! I started with a junk one to begin with. This being a maintenance item, it doesn’t look as though it’s ever been done.
Once a year should do the trick I think.

Fyi. There are many suggestions for cleaning and improving the VW heat riser system on both Samba and utube. You have already encountered several of the problems, both factory and aftermarket. Might be good to watch someone else struggle for a while.

Haha I’m assuming you’re saying that based on my proposed shop size? My wife is an amazing woman. We’ve been talking about sizes and she just keeps telling me to build what I want the first time. 😀
This could get expensive!
