If you got it as cheap as those initial bids looked, you did good. Worst case scenario: clean it up and sell it on.

Well I bought the hood, probably be a while before I find out if it will work, will post my findings later.

Go up a bit for autoX. Like, 22 in front & 28 rear. Otherwise lower. After I bought new tires the knuckleheads at the tire shop pumped like 35 lbs in all 4 of em. Thought my teeth were gonna shake out on the ride home.

I’m running 18 psi front – 24 psi rear and it’s been working really well.

Tks Kent. I’ve never felt comfortable with VW’s window screen filtering system and because of that I probably only average about 400 miles on each oil change. I’ve been putting it off because I was hoping to install a 4-1 merged header, but recently discovered that my engine cover won’t allow it.

Use 15-18 PSI in the front, and 24-26 in the rear. May take a bit of experimenting on your part.

I’ve been taking advantage of the unseasonably nice weather to move stuff out of the sheds into the new garage, adding a few of the decorations I’ve collected over the years.
Most importantly, the new engine is about 50 yards closer to being in… 🙂
Hope to finish the unpacking and putting things away in the next few days, and back to wrenching…[Read more]

Just a thought, but if you are in there anyway, consider replacing the plastic bushing with one of these and you likely will never have to touch it again.

The wing brackets Tom posted are the ones that are on my Duchess.
Remember, our windshield frames basically mount backwards. The groove faces the front, not rear.So the brackets are mounted on the new “front” of the frame and leave the side of the frame completely clear with nothing to interfere with the side curtain snaps. -

Dave, I saw those but they are not the same as the ones shown in the assembly manual drawing in for the Dutchess manual I posted earlier. The one I’m looking for has just one bolt for the wing and then a grub-screw (or two) to fasten to the frame of the windshield.
I think the ones you will be using will interfere with the side curtain when cl… -

Dave,
If you don’t feel comfortable doing this, take the old one to the trophy shop, and they will make the pattern for a fee. Make sure you get a .pdf or .cdr file of the pattern if you ever need replacements, so you don’t have to pay the setup charge again.Bill -

Dave,
Make a pattern .001″ outline in your computer, save it a .pdf file, and take it to a trophy shop, with your plexiglass, and they can cut it for you with their laser. The laser will flame polish the edges. Use cast plexiglass instead of extruded, as it cuts smoother. I had a graphics business for over 30 years, and it is very simple to f… -

BTW, this discussion of the shift plate reminded me of these quick shift kits for the stock VW shifter;Quick Shift Kit on AmazonIf you are using a stock VW shifter, these inexpensive things make a huge difference, reducing the distance the shifter must be moved by 40%. They do not work with most aftermarket shifters, which have something similar…[Read more]

I just ordered the new Wind Wing Hardware, from Finish Line Auto Parts. They are the exact same as the hardware that came with my Classic Roadsters Duchess Kit, back in 1985. They are quite pricy though, about $56 including shipping from California to Florida, for a set of four hinges and fasteners. Now I have to get some Plexi Glass from Hm Depot…[Read more]

I second what Allison says about using a plastic zip tie. It was easy to install, then I lube the heck out of the shift rod and the bushing. Rob and Dave’s VW article about removing and repair on the shifter, always use the phrase of “Ramp up Right” when reinstalling the shifter plate. This has served me well upon my annual lubing up the shift rod…[Read more]
