Excellent point Steve.
The comment about “production” convertibles is definitely true.I suspect having solid panels down the length of the TDr helps. -

Thank you Happy Jack for the article. I have been trying to figure out my idle problem and you just described it to a “T”. I will look closely at the 009 distributor.

Also, I wonder how much the side panels add to the structural strength of the overall car body. Removing them may compromise the integrity. I always thought car companies simply cut the top off of a car to make a convertible, until I talked to car designer and was told, unless planned as a convertible from the start, there had to be internal…[Read more]

I agree it would look awesome! But…
I doubt it would fit “out of the box.” Our cars are close, but they are not exact recreations. The inner body panels are different as well. There may be no place for the hood latches to attach to (down on the corners of the side panels). On a VW based car, you’d be opening up the trunk space with the vents on th… -

I like that idea. Please post photos.
I have some very old TD original dash trim on mine. I like the worn out brass look but I’m sure it’s not everyone’s favorite beverage. For the top piece I used the thinnest stick-on chrome moulding from one of the usual supply houses. Very nice flexible stuff, looks the part and sticks great, but lacks that… -

Don’t know if this is the stuff that you are talking about but Cowles Products Company, New Haven, Ct makes and sells something called “Custom Chrome” which is flexible and comes with a peel off 3M adhesive back. Good stuff. Seems to age well. The 1/8″ stuff will bend around a 1″ radius nicely. Bright chrome look, even though it is plastic.

…I sure hope that was a Freudian slip — I said I had my ‘snowfield’ reservation at Carlisle — I sure hope that ‘show field’ is what I wound up with, not ‘snowfield’….in May…in PA???……….

@ Kent and Paul. The bezel’s actually pry off from the bottom, but you do need to remove the light to see that. Bulb looked fine, so it’s probably an electrical issue.

I’m in! But, I gotta tell you – with this aging body, it’s getting a trifle harder each year.

Thanks for sharing. I took out my not functioning radio, made a wooden box to fill in the hole and finished it with a stained oval wooden door.I used some chrome trim around the edge, but am not totally satisfied with how it looks. Now have a usable (if small) glove box like the originals.I’ll check at my local DIY for your solution.

Like many have already said, I’ve driven my car only a couple of times after dark. Like owls, bats and other night creatures, it seems speeding semi’s like the dark, and being the smallest car on the road becomes frightening. I hate driving in a fog (I saw a very bad multi car crash happen in the fog) even in my full size car, so would never…[Read more]

Great job all the way around!I am in awe of you guys who take on the challenge of making your own TDr’s. I don’t have the time, space and patience needed. That’s why I bought the one I did!

GeorgeDo you have a brand name or a manufacturer for the product. We do not have Ace hardware stores in Canada. I am replacing my dash and could use the product you have described to finish the edge

I second Paul’s suggestion. There’s likely a screw on the bottom, perhaps hidden by the mounting bracket. That’s how mine come apart. You have to remove it from the mounting bracket before you can remove the screw.KentT2016-01-27 12:57:03

I felt all around the chrome bezel and didn’t notice anything.
They had been encased in this ugly black plastic lense protector which made me think they were some sort of cheap Jeep-type add-on (which I had planned to get rid of) but once I pulled the plastic protectors off and realized they were actualy metal, I liked the look of them. Here’s a… -

Looks same as what I have, they’re flat on the back.
Lenses with small circled JF on right side and vertical HALOGEN on left side. There’s a small Phillips/crosshead screw at the bottom of bezel holding the lens, next to bracket.Since yours was painted maybe that got covered over…?If not, I would think the lense or bezel must twist at least… -

Just guessing…Is there a screw, set screw or some other attachment on the bottom? Might even be hidden by the mounting bolts.
