  • Hub cap with medallion is $35 at Moss. Maybe buy one and see what you need to do on the spare wheel.

The originals fit on three spear-tip “pips” that were affixed to the wheels. A careful person could make something close with 3 sheet metal screws.
She really does look fine as is though. New tires are the ticket. You will love how much better s…

  • Yes, my seat bases were replaces with a couple pieces of angle iron. The corner of the shelf has extra padding behind the carpet. It’s right in the lumbar region of your lower back and I don’t find it uncomfortable at all. Just like blondes and brunettes, everyone has a different preference.

  • Thanks Ed.

In light of some of the things you mentioned I’m thinking the best thing to do is keep the rims I have and go with the taller Vanagon 185/80 r14.
The whole reason why I went with a TDr was because I wanted something that would be fun without the headache of a 60+ year old car – swapping out wheels sort of goes against my original…

  • I personally don’t see how that could be comfortable, at least in my own car.  There is a vertical drop below the package shelf and a second, smaller shelf below that that sticks out about 3″.  With nothing between the package shelf and the lower shelf but some padding, that sounds very uncomfortable for my lower back for more than a few m…[Read more]

  • I can see that your rear fenders are molded to take the correct, early TD tail lights, but something bigger is bolted over them.

The headlight brackets look right too, though the wiring is non-standard. The wire “should” travel through the hollow bracket to the fenders, then through to the inside.
Wire wheel hub adaptors are standard TR2-3-4, on 4…

  • So I guess it makes sense to just have a car for every season — AWD for winter, a pick up for those mandatory spring trips to That “blue” or that “orange” Big Box Home Improvement store, and a very fine Tdr for the rest of the year…!!!

  • Toller: do not allow your turn signal switch to dictate where and how you sit in the car. Get a little butane torch and heat it up and bend it. If it breaks, epoxy it back on. Or do what I did: use an old pen–hollow it out and epoxy THAT on the turn signal nub.

Or just lop it off and wire the signals to a three-way toggle switch on the…

  • Original TD wheels are hard to come by. Many are a bit out of true as well, and they are often pitted. These are tube rims, and they lack the “safety lip” that all modern automotive wheels have. That lip keeps the tire from coming off in the event of a high-speed blowout. It’s hardly ever a factor, but in the rare case, you’re glad it’s there.

    So…

  • Nothing wrong with that!

Since I never drove a WRX, and the Impreza looked about the same to me, it never mattered that I wasn’t driving a turbo race/drift car. Although mine being a hatchback… well… I couldn’t see it from the outside while driving anyhow. 😆

Thanks for showing how you did that. I forgot about the wheel wells. I’ve got the seatback adjuster brackets, doesn’t really do anything except hold onto the seat because it’s tight up against the wheel wells with little to no forward movement possible.

All this is making me anxious to get back to doing things with the car.

Spechols, I believe that what you did was almost exactly what billnparts did a few years ago.

So, I thought I just HAD to have “real” knock off wire wheels on my VW based TDr. But the only ones I found were 14″.
I bought them and adapted them to my MiGi.  Lotsa work and some extra expense.  Your 185-75r14’s are almost exactly the same overall diameter as the 165/15’s that are popular on VW’s.  However, they are a bit fatter.  Looki…[Read more]

David, with regard to interference with the turn signal switch many of us have cut and or bent our VW switch levers to get them out of the way of the steering wheel. ……or, you could go with a dash mounted turn signal switch like original TD’s had.

  • Toller replied to the topic Moving the seat back in the forum My Project 9 years, 7 months ago

Royal, was looking for a steering wheel without dish offset but as I have signal light switch on steering column it has a bend in it that would prevent zero offset wheel from being used. As signal switch is brand new and appears to be made of aluminum I am reluctant to cut it and re-weld (fact that I have had little success in welding aluminum may…[Read more]

  • My BCW front engined TD has 14 inch wheels and it came with Roadking Grenadier p185 – 75 r14 tires.

The tires have some cracks, so I’m thinking about replacing them.  The wheels resemble TD’s (round holes) but have 16 rather than 15 holes in them.
I feel that the car would look better with slightly higher tires.  So here are my questions:

    1.  Be…

  • Yes, I’ve moved that seat back to mount up on the rear shelf. Just move it back to where you are comfortable then cut it down to keep the height reasonable. I moved it 4 times before it got to where it is now.

Hey guys,  I believe that billnparts has moved his seat back and up somewhat because he is no small fella…..and he drives a lot, so it must be comfortable (for him).  I’ve been in Bills TDr – lotsa room.  As I recall, Schu has done some modifications to his seating position also.  I went through a pretty thorough steering wheel search a whi…[Read more]
