Karen & I got home in Bridget in the rain about two hours ago. Everything went swimmingly. I had been afraid of driving in rain before but it wasn’t bad–no leaks until the final 2 miles, and we didn’t get wet even without the side curtains.
Had a great time and I want to thank Dale, Richard and Paul for making the trip–Paul especially, given what transpired. Paul, you are a valued and respected guide. Couldn’t have found our way to the hotel without you.
Richard: good luck on the way up to Maine. Thanks for the laughs and the beer. We totally owe you several.
Dale, great to meet you. Having made it back to Joppa safely I now believe you’re in range for a cruise. Let’s set it up this summer.
To all y’all who couldn’t make it this year: you missed a real show. The Speedster/Spyder dudes were a hoot, too, and super nice. While our contingent of TDs did not surpass the Porsche replicas (They had maybe 40 cars and even more people), we did outnumber the original T series owners, who were able to muster only a single TF and one TD. Our cars got a lot of compliments and even more looks. Here’s hoping and planning for a big turnout next year.
In true British style, toast it with a Pimm’s cup:
Into a pitcher or glass slice one or two nice strawberries, several slices of kirby cucumber and some crushed up mint leaves, then fill with lemonade.
Into an iced Collins glass (or plastic cup, whatever), decant two parts of your lemonade mix and then pour one part Pimm’s Number 1. Top it off with tonic water or 7-Up or Sprite and garnish with a slice of the cucumber and/or a sprig of mint.
May 23, 2010 at 6:18 pm #241437Ed, Thanks for the update,I have been waiting to hear how it went even checked the forum yesterday and early this morning to hear all about it. sounds like you all had a great time. I wish we could have been there. My son Frank and I have been working diligently on the migi and although we are several months behind schedule we hope to take her for a test drive today. We replaced the pans and refurbed the chasis we redid the dash (several times, but thats another very long story), have new seats, new door hinges and latches, new headlight brackets and turn signals, new steering column, out of a chevy and a new steering wheel, new top, new guages, new stereo and speakers, rebuilt and repainted the engine. We cut out the gas tank tray in the front and built a new one from aluminum we were able to drop the tank 9″ and make room to move the battery from under the seat to the front next to the tank and have enough room for the jack and tire iron all will be under the new luggage compartment floor, which is the whole front compartment about 10″ deep. We also cut out the false radiator cap and replaced it with a model A neck and cap that look very similar and are in the process of piping the filler for the tank to that cap. I told the guys in the local hot rod club what I wanted to do and with a sparkle in their eye and a couple of “that would be Cools” they called all over the area and found someone with model A parts willing to donate to the project. When I first showed it to them last year, they said “oh its a beetle” with nose turned up but after seeing all the work my son and I have done we have now been accepted and everyone seems excited to help in any way they can. I think we gained a little rat rod cred when we adapted the chevy colum and harness to the Bug. I have taken more photos of the whole process and hope to post them as soon as I can. I am glad you all got to meet and have a great time at the show, maybe will try to make it next year.

May 23, 2010 at 6:57 pm #241438Will, you are a giant. A craftsman. Can hardly wait to see what you turn out.
It’d be awesome to see you caravan out with both yours next year & maybe pickup some of the others on the way. The longest distance driven award for the speedster club went to a guy who came 700 miles. But there were quite a few still standing after the 500 mile call. A 2,800 mile TD convoy would be epic.
It was a good time, even though K and I got there pretty late, and Paul had some engine trouble. Hoping that’s less than met the ear.
May 23, 2010 at 7:04 pm #241439Here are Richard Wobby, Ed Ericson and Karen and Dale Schumacher.
Paul Mossberg is behind the camera. And Paul’s Duchess is not in the photo…because she didn’t make it. Fifty miles into, she blew up her motor motor about 50 miles into Friday morning’s drive. More on that experience in a separate note!

May 24, 2010 at 9:52 am #241441Ok so Paul is behind the Camera, can you give me the right to left so I can put faces to the names. Ed, I’m not a giant, just someone stubborn enough to weather the trials and errors, and there have been errors, but I guess thats how we learn. This has been a lot of work but a wonderful father/son experience. We have worked side by side and I have taught him every step along the way Frank has spent alot of time soldering wire brushing painting ohming out the wire loom, stripping and terminating wires and upholstering just to name a few things. As for the trip we hope to take at least one of the cars to southern california by end of summer to visit my family that is a 1200 mile trip and should be a good test as to weather a crosscountry is possible. It would be great to make it next year as my oldest son lives in Cleveland and we could stop and see him along the way. We will keep you posted.

May 24, 2010 at 10:21 am #241443Will,
Classic Roadsters ran the full filler pipe up to the radiator cap onthe VW kits.
I’ve had much fun over the years seeing the paniced look on gas station attendants’ faces when I start pumping gasoline into my “radiator”.

May 24, 2010 at 10:29 am #241444In maine for the day and night more to fllow I’m still blacberrying
But I would recommend a story by max zimmer on paul might be more entertaining than
The truth. It was in a past edition. Of kit car mag. If you can’t find it let me know
Worth a post unto itself. Guys great time as I’ve said in the past your the greatest
Anybody have dates for next year let me know. Also I’m starting my search for a brother for
Ally. It should be a little speedster or spyder. We ll see. Best to you all. Great time
May 24, 2010 at 10:49 am #241445Thanks for the pic, Paul. I’m gonna refrain from chiming in on your engine breakdown post, since I’ve not even adjusted the valves yet on mine. Hope to learn something useful from your trial though, and hope the trouble isn’t a high-dollar type.
May 24, 2010 at 11:27 am #241446Paul, Thats where I got the idea, Octagon loaned me his Classic Roadster build manuals and although his car is a chevette kit the book covers both models. Funny you should mention the funny looks that concept is exactly what got the hotrod guys excited enough to help me.

May 24, 2010 at 1:03 pm #241447Will, it’s become apparent over the years that car guys, in general, are easy to amuse!
Ed et al, stay tuned to the Engine Trouble thread for updates. It’ll be a while though. I’m gonna have to drop theengien to continue the diagnosis. And that won’t happen for at least a couple weeks.
OK Richard, who let the cat out of the bag about Max’s “Volvo Guy” column in Kit Car Builder? Max? Al? Or Rocky?
Back on topic…see what you guys miss by not coming to Carlisle? The cars are cool. But the hobby really comes down to the people, not the cars.
Of course the downside to seeing the cool cars, is that the madness digs deeper and you start saying things like Richard says above about looking for the next car. Careful Wobby, Speedsters can run into rbig bucks. Some of those cars you saw have $40 or $50k in them.

May 24, 2010 at 2:40 pm #241449Wobby thinks he’s gonna buy a Speedster for like $2500. The hell of it is, he probably is!
May 24, 2010 at 2:59 pm #241450Wobby…let us see photos before you do that and end up looking like this….

May 24, 2010 at 5:18 pm #241452Dude! Get to work on your car!
Or, if you must play with photoshop, use the lasso tool to get just your car and drop it into the existing background. Should put yourself in there too. And maybe Paul Newman or Lady Gaga while you’re at it.
May 24, 2010 at 5:33 pm #241453Paul/Richard,
I did spend less then the 2500.00 for my speedie, but it was a basket case
and will cost me a ton by the time I am done, but a lot less than many else
will have invested ( not counting all the work I have done ).
May 24, 2010 at 6:17 pm #241454I don’t have photoshop. That’s just an amateur cut and paste.
I’ve gone as far into the motor as I can with it still in the car.
And the next couple weekends are filled. So I won’t be able to get the motor out for at least a few weekends.Paul Mossberg

May 24, 2010 at 9:55 pm #241456Rich, I thought you’d spot that one! Looks like a lot of work, and I’m not completely sure about that pan he’s including. But you’re right, they’re out there.
Paul: wish I was retired; I’d drive up there and help/watch you do that motor. Even if it’s just new heads, it’d be a valuable lesson for me.
May 24, 2010 at 10:14 pm #241457Hey I wish I was retired too!
Richard…just from eyeballing the pictures…the pan has not yet been shortened. And the front end looks pretty rusted. Only visible suspension component is the front beam and that has been stripped bare of even the grease fittings. No visible torsion bars, no upper or lower control arms. Ad already says no engine or transaxle. I bet the rear suspension is missing too. And of course you have to ship everything from Nevada. Just my humble opinion…keep looking.

May 26, 2010 at 9:34 pm #241459I’m home and can’t say enough about the weekend. What a good time. Even though Ally was being tempermental. You guys were great. Schu even got to assist me pushing Ally home from our ride as well as pulling her to show field. Thanks again. The answer is….
I pulled the tank filter, not bad cleaned tank as best as possible, the tank appears to be part of frame I’m going to look into pulling it but seems attached under fenders big job. Refilled with a couple gallons of gas and headed out, Schu where are you? made it my mile and stammered and stalled waited 5 minutes and restarted and limped home. Tryed to clear lines and at 100lbs pressure she popped there is a T about 1 foot from tank that the over flow and gas line meet at. pulled the T and proceeded to dump 2 gallons of gas accross me and the floor grabbed a new one and voila shes happy runs beautiful even hold a tune. well till next year
May 26, 2010 at 10:04 pm #241460What the heck is that thing doing there?
