Grease?? Help.

Hey guys, I’ve been absent for a while but work is continuing on the restoration.  I’ll post some progress pics soon.

However, I need some help.

I am trying to find some thick grease (Cat#4 or 5) to put in my steering box but no one around here seems to carry anything but bearing grease (Cat#2).

I’ve seen other references to a thicker paste type grease in several threads but can anyone tell me WHERE you purchased it?

Is it special order? Can you describe it so I can chase it down?

I’m ready to close off my steering box after rebuilding and put my torsion arms back in the front suspension and I’d like to use a thicker grease.  But I’m getting no where.

Grease? Every steering box I owned called for Hypoid 90 gear lube. Did VW make a late model steering box that called for grease?

BDriver, The 69 vw steering box is not sealed tightly enough for a light weight oil like 90w. 

Here’s a view of the seal on the bottom, which will not hold anything in a fluid form without leaking.

Here are the gears in the box.  As you can see they are fairly large worm gears and simple bearing grease doesn’t “feel” like it provides sufficient friction reduction.

I’ve seen others use a yellow or amber paste type grease but I cannot find it in any of my local parts stores.

I’m hoping someone can point me to a vendor.

Question: Just had my 63 beetle steering box rebuilt and was wondering if it is supposed to be lubed with grease or oil?

Some research says EP oil (like a gearbox) and others say grease it.

It did have a very heavy grade of grease inside it (but im not sure this is correct).

Response: The box changed just before the ’63 model (in most markets). If the box has a threaded plug in the cover, it should have 90W Hypoid gear oil. If it has 2 rubber bungs, special grease was used.

I replaced the steering box in my 74 Ghia. Came with instructions to add Lubriplate 105. I also use lubriplate when I assemble my engines. The extreem heat of the engine oil will disolve the lubriplate which is what you want in an engine but works really well and doesn’t melt or liquify in the steering box. 90 wt oil is used for the transaxle which is sealed way better than the steering box.

thanks for the details.

I actually saw all those threads over the past weeks and it’s clear that my box
has the 2 holes in the cap. 

I saw the reference to Lubriplate as well but must have missed the direct link to the 105 grease.

My issue was I couldn’t seem to find the product anywhere….even when I looked
on the Lubriplate site.  I guess I was impatient or staying up too late to
do my research.

I like Lubriplate’s “suggested procedure” to “…apply LUBRIPLATE No. 105 as a light coating by means of a brush or swab or by spraying to all moving parts of the engine.”

I believe it should go on to say, “You VW guys should ignore all that brushing and swabbing crap and just squeeze as much as you can into your steering box.”
