Had a couple pulleys laying around so I lifted the cage up as far as I could inside the garage and found I was just able to drive under it and lower it down on it’s pads. I think I’ll invest in a genuine block and tackle and make the job a bit easier in the future.

Aah! Progress.

There is a smartphone app titled “Tire & Disk” that will automatically calculate variance between tire sizes. You simply plug in the two sizes and viola, instant answers.

Okay, it works as designed. 24 bolts(6 mounts, 4 bolts each) and it lifts off. My son showed up with a couple friends so we took it off. Very tight to the body, but nothing was damaged in the process. Currently finishing it in the dark brown fender color.

Mine’s not a VW chassis but I fit 15″ x 7″ wheels with 205/60R15 up front with 235’s in the rear. My wires have a bigger offset and I run only 195/70R14’s with them.

You could always go the cheap route as I did. $50 for a quart of boat paint and brush it on. Comes out better than you’d expect. Good enough for who it’s for.
