If you really must have a front engined car (which weighs 300 pounds more than a VW-based one, features a teeny-tiny footwell and has no storage space), I’d say go Ford, just on parts availability.
That said, and given the age of these kits, seems likely that suspension work and an engine swap might be in the cards anyway. Everything you’re… -

I had a close look at them and I think they are actually a 7″ light set way back in an oversized chrome housing.

The Ford 2.3 was in production for over twenty years. The Chevette not so much. The Ford suspension is the suspension of choice for the aftermarket rod builder. The Chevette…???.

Hmm. What’s your budget & expected expenditure for a VW wasserboxer?
Or better: what’s your problem with the Type 1 you have now? Maybe you have a $100 problem there.Mine’s hella old (1966 single relief case, est 250,000 miles) and getting loose; only reason I’m retiring her. I figured a nice 1835 or 1915 build would set me back about $4,000 and… -

Pretty sure I did not have to take the brakes and stuff apart to replace the whole front beam. I did have the control arms off though, even though I didn’t need to do that either.Looks like you just need to disconnect them from the wheel with a ball joint separator (a pickle fork will do, since you’re replacing them anyway and so not worried about…[Read more]

Yay, Roy. You done real good, and NC is being reasonable here. $12,600 is just about right for a good running TD, and $5k is, I think, spot-on for an average, good running TD replica. Though yours is a little better than average, I think.

edward ericson replied to the topic MiGi on a lift in the forum VW Based Kits 12 years, 2 months ago
I use the torsion tube in front–can lift both wheels easily if I’m near the middle. In back I use either the torsion tube housing or the square tube subframe from the kit. If I’m in the middle of that the whole back of the car comes up pretty easy.Word to the mechanic: whatever you lift it with, be damn careful in removing any of the front…[Read more]

Paul, you are a scholar Sir!
The Fiberfab was a punt on my behalf as was the additional of the word Jaguar (I saw the leaping mascot). I am a Jag man myself but have never owned a SS100.This particular replica seems an odd mixture, to my eye, of SS100 shape but “Dune buggy” bumpers and tail lights. I wish they wouldn’t do that. -

While you’re there, might want to think about ripping out any wire that’s spliced more than twice and replacing with with a new wire. Could save some headache later on.
