Welcome, Leigh. Several of us have various exhaust hook-ups under our TDs, and some have experienced more or less fiberglass scorching with headers or tail pipes. Sometimes a new muffler rig solves the problem. Sometimes it just takes a bit of persuasion on the existing exhaust pipes. Sometimes both. Do you have a stock Bug muffler right now?

Welcome to the site. Sorry, I can’t help with your muffler question as mine is a Ford. Be patient and you’ll have several qualified replies in a matter of minutes…usually.

Thx Paul (and everyone else) I suppose it wouldn’t be a “hobby” car if there was nothing to do. 🙂 I have learnt that :Lexan can only be used for side and rear windows and definitely not main windshield! Funny Safelite don’t know that!I will post solution when I have one.

Could the glass be just a tad too wide and with the frame pulled tight to the body is placing too much stress on the glass? The frame could be easily checked with a straight edge.

dggrant replied to the topic Windshield Glass Template in the forum VW Based Kits 12 years, 2 months ago
Thinking about this it could well be a crack due to stress and not because it was hit with a stone. I don’t remember any stone hitting it and there doesn’t seem to be any chip. So it could well fall under the “Eddie Theory”. Safelite say they went thru 4 windshields with each one cracking. On the other hand the windshield wasn’t cracked when I got…[Read more]

Hi Ed:I’ll check that out. I’m no mechanic so this is fast getting out of my level of comfort. I think the Safelite guys just didn’t want to do it hence the “Bent frame” and Lexan solution offered. Thankfully, you guys in the forum have been much more supportive 🙂 . Bill (crash55) my local MG buddy is calling around some of his friends and my…[Read more]

Dan: Safelite guys ought to be able to say for sure that the frame is bent–or it’s not. There should not be any doubt either way. I can totally get that they’re not going to install it for you ’cause it’s not in the book. My guys wouldn’t install my glass either after they cut it to make way for the top-mount wiper motor. But that policy should…[Read more]

Apparently, Lexan comes in two types. The more expensive (obviously) is used in Race cars and for windows of construction vehicles. I will check state regs just in case.

Another clue – maybe…
I’m having trouble with my windshield (cracked) see other post. Bill (crash55) was kind enough to let me draw around his windshield which is currently off his FF MiGi. It turns out that his windshield is a couple of inches deeper than mine. So I guess FiberFab is out? -

Next exciting installment…
I’ve been working with Safelite over the past 6 weeks. Bill (crash55) even got me a template. Now after 4 broken windshield attempts, Safelite are telling me that they think the windshield frame is bent (hence cracking each new windshield). They suggest I use “Lexan” rather than glass. Any suggestions on bend… -

Overlap, eh? Learning new things on this board alla time.
Here’s a TD side panel on the ‘bay. Not seeing the overlap here but my eyes ain’t all that.I always thought they made louvres, basically, by cutting the metal while bending the cut parts, like so. It is not immediately clear to me how any overlap would occur in this process. Maybe the press… -
edward ericson replied to the topic electric fuel pump in the forum General Discussion 12 years, 2 months ago
Ditto that. Check your mechanical fuel pump flow–and be vigilant with the filter(s). My only real break down so far came as the first tank of fuel got down below 1/4. It was crud in the tank lodging in the fuel filter.
Electric pumps have been known to fail as well. -
billnparts replied to the topic Louvers anyone? in the forum Chevy/Ford Kits 12 years, 2 months ago
Ed, the molded fiberglass panels lack what what would be an acceptable overlap that exists with a punched steel panel. All you could expect to achieve with the fiberglass panel is a row of vertical slots in the molded ribs.

You think the opened louvers won’t look good because the glass is too thick? Or some other reason?

It would be great to welcome more members to the Pittsburgh area. Bill and I will certainly do what we can (including beer and BBQ ;-)). Our current plan is maybe get to Carlisle next year. As I only have a 5 gal tank, we’ll do it with plenty of stops.

Thanks, Bill. I knew I could call you if the spare was NG, and that kept me from panicking.
