Wow. 5 gauges for $550? I used Autometer in my old Chevy and they were good.Doing a 5-inch each Tach and Speedo plus 2-inch fuel, oil and volts or amps, in mint green with black numbers, black pointers–this would get you right in the neighborhood of the original TDs. I’d do it for sure if I had not just done all my guages. The price is very good…[Read more]

Back when we actually sold speedo gears, the rule of thumb was the change in the number of teeth on the driven gear (the gear at the end of the cable) was apx. 7mph per tooth. Add a tooth to slow the speed indicated. Decrease the number of teeth to increase the indicated speed.Whoops…I just remembered that the VW models run off a wheel hub. You…[Read more]

Well, the car is all apart, but here are a couple photos.First, the upper flange had to be removed for the thicker glass hood would close flush. The way the hood sets on the side panels maintain the contour correctly.
The lower shell has a different curvature leaving gaps in the surround. This is something i’m correcting in this tear down.
I’m…[Read more]

The main body tub is shown in the background. It has windshield installed. When I first read that, I took it that he removed the body and then decided to move on to a different project. Selling, without putting it back together.

Ah, missed that. Maybe $1000 then if it’s all in order…Wonder what he’s doing with the body. Someone should point him to here.

Wow. That looks like a deal for someone who wants to play. Unclear that the body’s there though?

With the removal of a couple more bolts, mine would look just like that.

Right again, Roy. The “Krauts” engineered the beams to be able to have the small springs removed for different applications. The bad engineering came when the kit car designers either didn’t know this or didn’t care, so they instructed kit buyers to cut the beam, have two family members stand on the nose of the car, and mark where it turns to, and…[Read more]

Kent: Roy did it right. We have a couple threads on this forum explaining this. The Samba guys on that thread don’t know. The way to do it right is by removing some or all of the small “half” leaves from the spring pack. Both the center mount for the leaves and the arms are shaped such that, even with those leaves missing, they lock on tight to the…[Read more]

Judging by the chrome, which looks decent, those are probably a deal at that price. They are Unobtanium.

glassed-in teakwood? You’re not taking any chances, eh? But–since it’s invisible and yet expensive– why not 1×2 aluminum square tubing?

I’ve been asked more than once if Bridget is a Rolls. Now I’ll just twitch my nose and say in a low voice: Bentley. But for the cut door it’s a pretty good likeness.

Saw a neat trick over on the Speedsterowners board: Lay out your wiring harnes on an actual piece of wood, close to the length you’ll need. V in some nails to keep the wires straight and mark all your terminal ends where they go. That way you can get the harness built on a bench, instead of lying on your back with your head under the dash. The guy…[Read more]

shu & Roy, you got it right. You can do anything you want with these. The true personal car. Hack it, cut it, drop it, raise it. It’s all a matter of personal taste. After 20+ years, mine simply resembles a TD. If that should offend anybody, I really don’t care. It’s mine.

Funny thing – even though I agree w/ Roy I modified my ride a bit to make it more hot rod like – I guess it’s all personal – maybe that’s one of the reasons we all like replicas – we can do what ever we want
