That is looking brilliant, d.An update on the wiper thing: I measured and marked the top of my windshield frame for the wiper and idler bearing holes and took my car to a glass and top shop. “I’m not touching that frame,” the guy said.Basically, he said what you said–take it apart, take the glass out, drill the frame and then cut the glass as…[Read more]

And here I thought the purple stuff had that zinc stuff. Geez. And for the price it ought to have flakes of real gold in it as well. The car took three quarts to get to the fill line on the dip stick. She’s got no remote cooler or oil filter I can see, so I wonder what that’s about.

Richard,
You need to RSVP ASAP w/ Bruce over at the speedster club if you want to
go on the cruises/dinners so we will have enough room for everyone.
I think his info is above or you can get on the speedster site and email him. -

Had a problem w/ mine once – filled the crankcase w/ fuel – the carb inlet
valve was stuck open and it siphoned all my fuel out of the tank. One way
to tell if this is the problem – remove the top of the carb and turn it
upside down and blow in the inlet – if you can blow through the little
valve needs to be replaced ( 4.00 – 10.00 part ) – if you…[Read more] -

Yeah, they could have been set too tight by the last guy. Muir says .006 but warns that the old book said .004. Think the #1 exhaust was about that, as were several of the others. The number three exhaust was a little tighter. Since that’s the hottest one, my understanding is that the valve stem might stretch a little over time, or just settle…[Read more]

Bruce, sounds like a pretty gnarly project. I very much hope it finds the right kind of psycho to complete it. I am not that psycho. But in the interest of furthering your agenda, can we get a more detailed description of the car’s present state? Like, the engine is in? The trans is in? Or not? Have you fit the cowl and hood (bonnet?) over that…[Read more]

Fuel pump diaphragm bursts? really? Hadn’t heard that one but if Greg
(Wolfgang on the Samba) says it’s so than maybe it is. He built his
Speedster engine 20 years ago and has yet to fire it up, though, so
then again maybe it’s not.Whatever, the oil smells like gas because unburned fuel is getting into the crank case. Besides that bad fuel pump,…[Read more]

Pretty sure Rich Wobby has the same car as you. Check out his pics for an idea of what a real sweet top looks like. He’s got the TD-like framed side curtains too. These are expensive but actually serve a purpose if you’re the kind of insufferable w**ker (as I am) who’d like to be able to tool around with the hood down but the side curtains up.His…[Read more]

Thanks, Paul. The spare is actually only about 3 years old, according to the code date on the sidewall. The other four are different, presumably much older, though I’ve not been able to get a bead on just how old. Possibly 2003, probably 1993.

Richard,
I am w/ Ed – if you used a pressure system and lots of fluid you most likely
have a bad MC out of the box ( made in China ). Pull it and send it back for
another.

Thanks, CA. I actually dropped the front back down about a half inch before setting the toe-in (took a lot longer this time). Gonna take her to a suspension shop this week for a 4-wheel alignment; I’ll see if they can dial back the negative camber a bit out back. That should stand her up just a little higher, if it’s possible. If not I’ll just…[Read more]
