Thanks for the link to the thread, Paul. Will there be a quiz?

I’m getting a real education here. What threw me off was my assumption that the Lafer was the only TDr without the bracket connecting the headlamps to the fenders.

It was on a flickr slideshow “MGTD”. I know I’ve seen it before.

Roy, John, Ed,I’m really scratching my head here. Are you referring to the green car for sale or to Vicenç’s “white thing”?Is the London Roadster like the Lafer in that the headlamps are only connected at the grille and not tied in to the fenders?-Dave

Vicenç,Thanks for taking the time to translate the article. It’s a shame more weren’t made, because it’s a beautiful replica. Would love to know if any of the 12 are still out there. -

I understand. Just throwing in my 2 cents where I actually have a bit more experience. (My first car was a Renault R10, so I got my crash course on automotive electrics early on.)

Man, that’s weird. Did you try to measure the actual current draw of each circuit? That would be the first step in getting to the bottom of the issue and determining whether you have a current draw problem or a supply problem. It’s also possible that your charging light circuit is too sensitive, but that’s also something you’d have to de…[Read more]

Ed,With respect to the electrical system, I’m trying to get a handle on what’s going on.Are
you saying that the brake lights and the radiator fan both cause your
charging light to come on, and that with the brake lights you get a
significant voltage drop, but not with the fan?-Dave -

I like the color scheme, though, and, as Paul pointed out, it wouldn’t take a lot to get it into nice shape. What has me a bit baffled is that the clutch pedal seems to hang down. I thought the VW pedals all hinged at the floor.

The outfit in Michigan must be a broker. I e-mailed them asking where I could see the car and got back a terse form letter requesting I call them on the phone. So I sent a note back saying, hey, I asked a simple straightforward question. Today I got back a personal note containing something of an apology for the first note and saying that th…[Read more]

There’s a good case to be made for Schu’s fuel cutoff. The car starts, the thief gets out on the road, and the car dies, probably in a location that’s not convenient for him to attempt to troubleshoot. (A couple of other considerations: there’s a disincentive to steal the sort of vehicle that’s going to draw the sort of attention replicas…[Read more]

Jack,I’m not sure whether I’d posted this picture before but here’s how I handled my space issue. The building inspector insisted on a support for the stairs and I made sure the contractor installed the support far enough to the right to leave me just enough room to park the TD (with a bit of maneuvering) and still be able to open the man door.-Dave

Great shots, John, and that dog is the spitting image of mine; it’s just that mine isn’t too bright and I’m afraid he’d jump overboard if I took him for a spin. And by the way–is that a genuine TD steering wheel?

I’m grateful for your service. I’m of the opinion that in order to have peace sometimes you just have to bust a few heads, and glad there are still “a few good men” out there able and willing to do it. Ed’s comments remind me of something that happened here in the DC area quite a few years ago, when I picked up the paper one Monday and read…[Read more]
