If you are thinking about going the Dynamat route there is a much less expensive material sold at Lowe’s and Home Depot. It’s called Peel and Seal. It’s in the roofing section. I lined my entire chassis and the rear package tray section on the body on my 65 Beetle with it and it makes a huge difference. It’s metal faced on one side with an…[Read more]

Glad to hear I’m not the only one with a leather helmet. I got mine off of ebay a few years back but alas it was to small so I’m in the market for one that fits. I am also interested in the prescription thingy with the goggles. The silk scarf is a cool idea but with the back draft from the wind I end up with it in my face more than blowing behind…[Read more]

Tom Colello replied to the topic Getting in and out with side curtains on in the forum General Discussion 13 years ago
You’re right Ed. That’s exactly why I don’t use them. This is my first winter with the car so we’ll see how it goes. I don’t much like even having the top up let alone side curtins. Too much of a closed in feeling. But I’ll leave the top up for most of the winter anyway. People down here look at you a little strange driving a car with the top down…[Read more]

Tom Colello replied to the topic Getting in and out with side curtains on in the forum General Discussion 13 years ago
From the sounds of things here you guys really have a time with the side curtins. I guess I lucked out. My Allison has side curtins like the early model Jeep YJ’s. The side curtin frame slips into the door itself and opens and closes with the door. Problem is either the side curtins are on or they are off. There’s no window to zip in or out.…[Read more]

Great post Ed. I especially like the show me the money comment.
I had a guy at the Cruisin The Coast event ask me how much I paid for Winston. When I didn’t say he asked $60K. I said with a smile. “No, but if you’re in the market I’d certainly consider $60K as a good starting figure. He smiled back! -

What’s the deal on these heated motorcycle suits? Sounds like a good deal for those frosty South Louisiana mornings. Both of them! LOL
Just kidding. We get some cold weather down here to. At least for us it’s cold. One of those heated suits would be great as long as it’s not to bulky. TD’s are not known for their over abundance of room in the cockpit. -

Wow, what a striking color. The interior really sets it off as well. Very nice work. Congratulations on a great looking vehicle.

One of the few times I’m glad I live in the deep south. Really feel for you guys up north that have to store your vehicles for the winter.

Hey Donna, Glad to see another TD owner from Louisiana. I live in Baton Rouge. If you ever go to the Golden Oldies Car Show in Hammond I’m usually there with my other VW friends. Would love to get together. There’s only one more show in Hammond and it’s the 2nd saturday Nov 12th. It’s at the mall back by Academy Sports. If the weather’s good we’ll…[Read more]

Tom Colello replied to the topic New Shifter Possibilities? in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 1 month ago
If the bushing and coupler are both ok you can purchase a short shift kit (again not expensive) that will greatly inhance your shifting expirience. You can also purchase an aftermarket shifter from a variety of manufacturers. Empi and Bugpack are a couple manufacturers that come to mind. They are more expensive than the short shift kit but are an…[Read more]

Tom Colello replied to the topic Any recommendations to raise front end ? in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 1 month ago
Both Allen and Paul are correct. The only axle with splines is the rear.
The front axle consists of an upper and lower tube. Inside the tube is a series of flat torsion leaves that go from one end of the beam to the other and go into the trailing arms. With Link/King Pin Beams the torsion leaves actually go completely through the trailing arms…[Read more] -

Went to Cruisin The Coast this past weekend and it was everything folks say it is. The weather was absolutely perfect. Winston was a big hit with both the young and old. Lots of thumbs up, smiles, waves, compliments and photo’s taken of him. Even had a couple folks from England stop and admire the car. Hooked up with Sarge in Ocean Springs and we…[Read more]

Thanks for the compliments guys. I’m very pleased with the new top both in color, material and craftsmanship.
Sorry I didn’t get around to taking pics of the side curtins last night. Got busy doing other things. Will post some soon though.

You have framed side curtains, yes?Ed, there is a flap sewn above the door that is supposed to slip over the side curtin top to prevent water from sliding off the roof and into the window. Tom Colello replied to the topic Ball Joints & Control Arms in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 1 month ago
I used German Ball joints from Wolfsburg West. They were a little more expensive but worth it in my opinion. When ever possible I like to use the German stuff. You pay a little more but the quality for what you get is worth the extra in my opinion. Most replacement parts you see these days come from either Brazil or China.
One bit of caution on…[Read more] -
