I ended up repairing my wiring, which was a mess.ย Three tips:1.ย Plan ahead on how the wires will be routed and secured, leaving slack enough to remove switches and gauges while still attached for troubleshooting but tucked away when the job is done. I flipped my fuse strip over so the majority of the wires would route up under the dash instead o…[Read more]

Interesting mention of using a third party title agent. If the cost is reasonable I think using someone who knows what buttons to push makes a lot of sense. I see that a lot in building permit cases. ๐

Luggage rack, folding windscreen, and (apparently) swing away spare are nice features and expensive to acquire if you don’t have them. It does look good in the pics, but mechanicals are an unknown. A lot of balance weight on the one wheel shown in closeup. On mine that meant tires could not be balanced and had to be replaced but at least not…[Read more]

Better picture of Speedo interior. The rounded drum thing seems to be a fluid coupling for the speed mechanism.

My version of the speedo face is a compromise. I used fonts which looked like the Vintage Reproduction fonts but I increased the size of the MPH numbers and simplified the dial scale. I suspect that the kit maker chose the metric scales to add to the european flavor of the vehicle. For me the bottom line was that the origional face was too hard to…[Read more]

So I took Doug’s suggestion and created a new face for my speedometer.
I did have some trouble with the thin, brittle chrome rim cracking but I was able to get it off and back on.
If anyone is curious about what the guts of the Vintage speedo looks like here it is:
If anyone wants the template for my speedo face PM me and I will send you a PDF.:-)

So I tested my speedo/odometer as follows:Plotted a round trip to a known address about 5 miles away on Mapquest – distance shows as 2.48 MILES one way.Noted odometer reading and drove the round trip – odometer shows the distanceย as 4.9 MILES round trip.So I am convinced that my particular example of the Vintage Reproduction instrument is set…[Read more]

Rich Kallenberger replied to the topic Tire sizes — I need wider shorter tires, I think in the forum VW Based Kits 10 years ago
I hear you about not scrapping apparently good tires. But, the tires which were on mt TDr when I got it looked good and had lots of tread. A few months later on a hot summer day I went for a 40 mile round trip highway drive and by the time I started back I could not drive faster than 35 without the front end shaking like it was about to fly apart.…[Read more]

How difficult was it to open and reclose the speedo case to access the face? I had mixed results doing this to replace broken glass on two of my 2″ gauges. Also interesting to note that my two large instruments are mounted in reverse of yours (l-r)Kall2015-04-26 17:01:22

Re: loosening side panel screws. Mine (FF) has only two bolts per side where the panel meets the firewall cowl. They are machine screws and the nuts are under the sidewall carpet and/or cardboard. Not easy to work with but do-able. Maybe reversing them and using acorn nuts on the outside would be better.

Yes, working on the gas tank is a pain. I have found that it helps a lot to loosen the two bolts holding the hood sides on, allowing them to be pulled away from the tank an inch or so (FF). Also, after several unanticipated removals I added a small shutoff valve and threaded fitting to the hose comming from the tank so it was no longer necessary…[Read more]

Here’s a picture of interest – An MDTD photographed in Ft. Myers Florida about 1955 or so. This was taken by my mother during a parade.ย Driver is likely the owner of a local auto dealer – Hudsons and other special interest cars.
