edward ericson replied to the topic Replacing Speedo Cable in the forum General Discussion 9 years, 10 months ago
There should be a tiny C-clip on the cable end that sticks out through the grease cap on the wheel. A little pick or eyeglass screwdriver will get it off. Then just pull it out from behind. The other end has a screw collar on the back of the speedometer. Order a bus cable to replace it, and squirt some liquid graphite in the sheave before installing it.

So cool, Bryce, that you have all that paperwork. I have all mine too???or most of it???we should compare notes. My car’s builder still lives at the address I found in the build package, so I won’t be putting that up here…
Ballast: I’m against it, I think these cars can be made to handle pretty well without it, and lighter is better, in general,… -

BCWs did not have front end ballast.

285 is OK for a cylinder head temp. Oil should stay below 230F. But, right: our gauges are suspect.

Hey, Phillip! Welcome to the forum.
Your problem sounds solvable. Can you tell us the manufacturer of your steering wheel? Or better yet, show us a picture? It’s a little fiddly to upload a pic to this site but I think that process is going to change within the next week or two.Meanwhile: have you tried ebay search and amazon search? I put in “VW… -

VW pan and a Subaru engine can be fun.
I will be working on a rollbar for that too.You may want to look around recent posts on this forum. One of our number has a Volvo’d ’52 with wire wheels. -
edward ericson replied to the topic Steering Box Adjustment – Need to cut a hole in the forum VW Based Kits 9 years, 10 months ago
The answer to your question is yes. A couple people on this board have used a hole saw on it, and a plug, painted body color, that fits perfectly in the hole. It’s hardly noticeable when done.

Sorry for your trouble, John.
How old are your tires? How much air pressure in them? And how hard and unforgiving is your front axle beam?I ask about all these non-brake things because, when I first got Bridget, she had*old tires*with 30 lbs of pressure in front and back, and*full torsion spring packs in the beam. And she wanted to skid. Even going… -

Good ta meet ya, Tom.
Front-engine chassis is a bit of a muddle, I believe. The kit mfgs included crude ladder frames but the dudes who have built them lately have modded or thrown them away and built their own out of 2×3 or 2×4 box.If I was doing it I’d go Ford and lean hard on Billinparts (AKA Bill Ascheman), who built his decades ago and still… -

Vicenc says he’s a lock. Dickk says he’s coming. Also my neighbor, Dan, who runs a 406-small-block powered, fully-caged, mini-tubbed Malibu drag car out of his driveway, where it is parked, uncovered, pretty much all the time. He changed his ring and pinion in the driveway last winter.
I also ordered some steel bar to fab up a couple lift jacks to… -

Tires under is always a good practice. I do that too (or did) unless they’d be in the way of what I was working on.

10w-40 if you can. 20-50 if it’s really tired, or really hot out.
