Mrlmd..just curious if you picked up the infrared thermometer and if so what temp reading did you get as compared to your gage? I also am curious if you checked your thermostat controlled flaps on your shroud to make sure they are opening. Mine does not have the thermostat installed and the flaps are always open.

I was about to order one of the shroud intake screens and discovered they only fit non doghouse shrouds. The early shrouds have a lip the screen will attache to. The doghouse shrouds do not have this lip. You could still fabricate a bracket to use the screen or simply screw or pop rivit some wire mesh over the fan intake opening on the later…[Read more]

Good point dbrock. I think I will put one on mine. Sounds like cheap insurance. I have run over those plastic bags in my truck and had them wrap around the exhaust and stink up a storm. On my td it stands a good chance of sucking into the fan. A member here the other day even mentioned the occasional hand check of the fan intake to make sure its c…[Read more]

Allen, I think there is an aftermarket screen that fits over the the fan shroud intake. I cant see using one on a standard beetle set up, but for those open fronts we have it looks like a plus.

Mrlmd..In my opinion which may not be correct. I would not close off the front unless I could properly seal the top half from the bottom half of the engine. Take a look at how a VW beetle looks. They do have a firewall in front , but they also seal the engine in the compartment with a gasket. They draw cooler air down from the top, the fan sucks…[Read more]

Mike replied to the topic New member Shifting Question in the forum VW Based Kits 14 years, 1 month ago
This was a good topic. I felt the same way when I got my VW based TD. Ed and Allen are right about the 45-50 range before shifting into 4th.I had never owned a vw before, but friends that had, told me to keep the revs on it and explained why. I agree with what Paul said about the engine sounding like its gonna explode at 3 grand, but when we t…[Read more]

Mrlmd I am glad to see you arent having a heat problem and its more likely the sender/gage. That is why I suggested the infrared thermometer. You had said “after driving 5 miles mine says 230 degrees on the gauge” and I would think from a cold start you should be able to drive 5 miles in death valley and not hit 230. The infrared thermometer is a…[Read more]

I agree with Bd and Larry. When I look at my car I see the things I still need to do, but when others see it they look at it like it was on the showroom floor. I think what Larry said about “reminded of happier times” is right on the button. My car seems to get more response from people older than 45 and younger than 15 . The 20 somethings w…[Read more]

In the 100 degree temps we have been running lately My oil temp seems to peak about 218-220 at 55mph, but eases down fairly quick to 205-210 when I back down on the speed. It also takes more than 5 miles to reach that temp. Im using Brad Penn 10-30 partial syntetic oil. Im not sure how much heat dino oil will take before it starts to cook. You…[Read more]

Cool story Ed. Glad you liked the points eliminator. I was going to add a modual to mine last year and discovered my distributor was on its last leg. I found a distributor at O’reilly that comes with a modual built in and ready to go with a match coil for under $130.00. This is a vacum and mechanical advance unit. Not only does my car start…[Read more]

That information is good to know Pink. Would the standard flasher be ok as long as the front led lights were used along with the standard lights in the rear?

Paul,
I have admired your TD for some time. The wheels and caps look great….Allen, thanks for the hubcap link. I have been searching for the no logo caps for sometime. I am ready to do away with the fake wire wheel look, but until you posted this link all I could find were the VW and Empi logo.

Good to see you get started on your build Allen. I like many others will be anxious to see photos. I was looking at your doner car pics and see you will be doing a pan rebuild. I hope you document this part as this will be a great opportunity to share some great information. I myself have patched pans that need to be redone.
Good luck to you on the build. -

The Volks guys at The Samba swear by Brad Penn racing oil. I started using it last summer and my engine temp dropped 10 degrees. I think I will stick with it. High in ZDDP. I found mine at amazon.com. It depends on the vendor, but averages around $5.00 to $6.00 a quart. Heres a link http://www.amazon.com/Brad-Penn-10W30-Partial-Synthetic/dp/B 0…[Read more]

Paul, I emailed you the drawing.
Larry, the Aluminum could be a good idea. I know that some aluminum can be tricky to bend. I did some research at McMaster Carr and found some 5/8 O.D. high pressure 6061 aluminum tube that they say is bendable with a tube bender. I have tried to bend flat sheet 6061 16 gage in a brake and that is what it did…[Read more] - Load More
