Do you have any lights at all? The flashers were working or not? Any electrical power anywhere? If not, check your battery cable connections at the battery and the negative also at the body or engine ground. Something vibrated loose somewhere. You’re going to have to check your dash and fuse block wiring too to see if you have power to there. That…[Read more]

Not to be nasty or condescending, but if you had answered all the responses to your ad, and from me by a phone message to your number and on craigslist too, you might have sold the car before it got destroyed. How much is it worth now and how much effort and expense would it be to restore it in it’s present condition?

Marc Lipsius replied to the topic question about fuel filters in the forum General Discussion 13 years, 9 months ago
There has been nothing caught in either filter.Condenser is new. Have no idea how old the coil is.It will restart sometimes immediately, sometimes it takes a 5 min rest.I have seen air bubbling up into the post pump filter either with the car running or after you shut it off, that’s why I wondered if the pump was getting too much air into it and…[Read more]

The whole engine was totally rebuilt, the Solex 34 PICT carb was cleaned thoroughly and what was plugging up the jet after a ride was a 1/2mm x1/8″ piece of either black plastic or rubber. It had to come either from inside the fuel lines, rubber surrounded by braid, also new, or the fuel pump, also new. I don’t know how old the lines were,…[Read more]

I have been having this ridiculous problem with my car that is unpredictable, where I may ride for a mile or 5 miles or 20 miles and it stalls just like it runs out of gas. There are no more pieces of black rubber or plastic threads plugging up my main jet, nothing appearing in the fuel filter between the mechanical VW pump and the carb, but I’m…[Read more]

I have used that stuff on vinyl windows on boats (Insinglass), like our convertible tops have, but never used it on solid/rigid fiberglass or plastic. I guess it will work on the wind wings too to remove fine scratches. There are a host or products to restore gelcoat but I am going to try that. How far does the 8 oz. bottle go, can you do the…[Read more]

Those are both nice looking, but too bad a little of the Empi emblem sticks out on the flat one, you don’t see it in the photo. What are you going to do with your wire wheel look-a-like hub caps? If you’re not going to save them for future use, want to sell one or two, or the set? I need one to cover my spare, the P.O. lost one on the road. You…[Read more]

Marc Lipsius replied to the topic question about fuel filters in the forum General Discussion 13 years, 9 months ago
The ” high pressure” side of the stock VW fuel pump is only about 3-5lbs at max, and with good tight connections, with even spring type hose clamps, shouldn’t be any problem for leaks. I am more concerned with heat in the engine compartment and how much heat those plastic ones can tolerate. l had a metal can type filter in the line but I replaced…[Read more]

Marc Lipsius replied to the topic Fuel Line in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 10 months ago
Whoever built my car ran a length of fuel line from the tank then to a copper line run under the left floorboard along the pan and up into the engine compartment, then another fuel line to the filter and fuel pump. I may blow out the old line in the center tunnel to see if it is clean and unobstructed because I think my present line is a little…[Read more]

I wouldn’t spend a fortune for a radio, you can hardly hear it anyway unless you’re blasting up the volume. And it’s not very secure against some idiot stealing it out of the dash. My car came with the usual sized rectangular hole in the dash and I got a digital radio with 18 FM and 12 AM radio presets and CD player and USB charging port for $49…[Read more]

Marc Lipsius replied to the topic Bumper Question in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 10 months ago
Why can’t you just go to a machine shop or metalworks place and have them cut a piece of 3/8″ stock and drill 2 ( or 4) holes in it to match up the bumper brackets and bolt it behind the chrome bumper?I will probably do that one of these days. It sounds like a good idea to beef up the chrome bumper just in case.

I can’t see or feel anything under my fan shroud, it’s the doghouse shroud and it’s completely sealed up underneath, can’t see anything with a mirror either, and I sealed up the tin to the body with some metallic heat resistant duct tape to try and keep the heat from rising into the engine compartment and that seems to be working. I don’t feel…[Read more]

I’ve done a few experiments trying to cool off my car – First – I made sort of a
firewall in front of the engine closing off the opening down to the transmission, not air tight, but intending to block some road
debris and leaves. etc from getting into the fan, keeping the sheet
metal a good 3-4″ away from the fan opening. I rode about 7-8 miles,…[Read more] -

I noticed that too, it won’t work on my car. I found a aluminum mesh grill at Home Depot that I am going to put over the front of the engine compartment to try and filter out stuff like that, to keep it from getting sucked into the fan. If a bag or a bunch of leaves got stuck on that screen it could possibly block off the whole intake into the…[Read more]

I may get one of those but I’m also going to look for some sort of screen or mesh to put over the opening in front of the engine, probably just screw it on into the fiberglass or pop-rivet it (then you can’t get it off so easily if you have to remove it for any reason). On my way to pick up a laser thermometer at Harbor Freight.
