James
Maybe one of these would work. At least it looks more period correct than some of the others I found.

or this one that may be too big

JamesI think Classic Instruments had a voltage gauge with the right bezel but the pointer, (easily changed) and the face were not quite right. I think I’ve seen some older gauges that said dynamo rather than volts, that would be pretty cool! Ringo

JamesYeah, that’s a map light. It came on the original dash and cleaned up good enough to re-use. I have seen similar lights on some antique boats, might check some suppliers for marine stuff.The problem of the glare was one that concerned me when it came time to put a finish on my dash. I started to go with gloss, then read about the oil f…[Read more]

JamesToo cool!There is no way I’m redoing my dash again this winter so I’ll save it for next time. You know, I couldn’t find an exact match volt gauge or I would have put it the dash. Maybe something like this for gauges of all kinds could be your next career!!ThanksRingo

Welcome to the group!
Y’all are going to have many miles with smiles now that you’ve got a replica TD.
One quick way to tell what “Classic” your car is that Classic Roadsters Duchess’ have about a 4inch “step” in front of the rear fenders that go down to the running boards rather than the fenders connecting directly at right an…[Read more] -

Bill,
I took a look in my Bentley manual and found this.
“All 1974 and later cars have alternators. But since late in the 1974 model year, the alternator has had an intergral-type regulator mounted atop it.”
So, it looks like most alternators have external but intergral regulators. What the heck that means I don’t know since all my beetles had…[Read more] -

Gang;
Road test complete, running great!
Went together with no problems. Almost ran out of room with the distributor when I was timing her but this winter I’ll move the distributor gear over one notch to give me some wiggle room.
20 miles later but I’ll still have to convince the wife it’s good to go the distance.

JamesI think nothing says high performance like turned metal! Love it and think it would look great in your car, esp with the black gauges like the Allard. Go for it!The indicator lights were my old ones that I re-used. I’m glad they were still good since I really like the large round mount on them. I looked for replacements to use but cou…[Read more]

James,Man, you’re going to be busy this week. Wiring, dash, starter, radio, hard lines to the heater,…..when you start to work on a car, you really work on the car!

Yup, the wheel is original. I refinished the wood when I did the dash, it was much darker due to the years of grime and I bleached the wood a little to get closer to the dash finish.

IT’S ALIVE!!!!
Going back together with no hitches. Fired up, twisted the dissy a little and it seems she run’s smoother than ever. Now I’ll put the water pump and other parts on (also had the radiator cleaned and pressure tested
) and check the final timing tomorrow or Thursday.
I’ll let yall know when she’s all buttoned up and does a test run.

Thanks all for the kind words;
The base wood is cabinet grade fine
5/8? oak plywood. I used many different cardboard templates to get
the overall size I wanted, then made cutouts of the gauges so I
could do layouts with the templates on the car. The plywood was cut
out close to final size then carefully sanded down to final
dimensions with an…[Read more] -

Okay, now I know the problem is at the inside mounting.
I checked my pedal and the bottom hole on the left of the pedal mount is close to the steering column but a good inch to the right and 1 inch below the column. The top mounting hole is way over to the right of the column. Not even close enough to the column to matter.
Check it with…[Read more] -

James;Finishing up some other projects around the house before I get started tearing it down. I’ve got her on some dollies so I can move her around until I can get serious. I’m thinking I’ll get started next week. I’m 99% sure it’s the belt dropping a few teeth or something along that line, so I’m committed to changing out everything, from the…[Read more]
