I think that Ed is talking about tempered masonite.  You can get it in lumber yards.  Used to be available in two thicknesses: 1/8 & 1/4.  I think it still is.

Dittos to Larry: The BCW’s are inside. On Original TDs, the seat backs are relieved to clear the more elaborate original style top bows, which pivot forward so the canvas and bows can all clear the edge of the tub.

Daytona MiGi top bows are on top of the tub.
