Dave, thanks for your additional input. You have given me some more items to check. Since I cleaned the batt terminals and got the battery charged, it has started ok. I will check the additional items you mentioned as well. Also I have kept a trickle charger on the battery to keep it charged.

Allen, I think so, but honestly I don’t remember for sure. I went to get the car today from my son’s house and it started just fine and no problems on the drive home.

Kall, I’m glad I didn’t pitch the “old” charger. I think that would have been a mistake and added to my list of many that have been made over the years.

I’m still at a loss as to what the real problem was/is. I had a starter problem when I first bought the car and had to replace the starter then. The car is still at my son’s house so I haven’t been able to do much with it yet.

Ok, not sure what was going on, but did get  the car started. The car is at my son’s house so I had him verify that the signals worked when the battery charger was on and the ignition key was on. In the process of him doing that, he called me and said he also noted a humming sound coming from the engine, but didn’t know what it was. I had not had this happen when I was working on this issue. I went over to his house and had him turn the ignition key while I listened at the engine. The hum was coming from the starter, but was not turning the engine over. The charger was still on and the gauge was flipping back and forth from showing it was charging back to zero and the fully charged light would come on. It kept doing this. The charger was new although I got it at Harbor Freight. At this point my son said lets take the battery cables off and connect the “old” battery charger directly to the battery. Note earlier I had also sanded the battery terminals and cable clamps to insure a good connection. They didn’t look bad, but did this anyway. When the “old” battery charger was connected, it showed the battery taking a charge so I left it on for about 6 hours. At that point it did not show the battery completely charged, but I reconnected the cables and the car started. Left the battery charger on over night and it showed a complete charge this morning. Given this, I suspect the battery was dead, but don’t know why it didn’t show taking a charge when I first connected the “old” charger to the battery. Any thoughts?

Allen, the signals do work. I must not have had the key on. Thought I did.

Ed, thanks. I’ll check that next.

Paul, yes the charger is connected to the battery cable clamps. When the charger is connected to the battery I have lights only( parking , head lights and tail lights). No turn signals, no horn, etc.

Stephen, can we post pics directly into the thread so we don’t have to go to another location to see the pic? If so, how?

John, are items 17,18,27,28 available. I didn’t see them as taken in the prior replies.

Philip, you might try Forever Sharp steering wheels. I just replaced a Grant type steering wheel with an Forever Sharp steering wheel and it came with a 1 1/2″ mounting hub and it bolted right up to the steering shaft and the steering wheel. I think if you talk with their tech support folks they could tell you if the 1 1/2″ mounting hub would work with your set up.

Paul, yes that is the thread. The cursor is in the comment box before I try to post the pic. When I get the pic uploaded, I pulled the window aside to see if the cursor was still in the comment box…it wasn’t so I clicked on the box and went back to the upload window and the cursor is gone from the comment window. I hit ok and still get an error.

I guess I’m just not meant to post a pic. I was going to try it again, but had to search for the steering wheel thread I had responded to earlier, so entered the same info I had before in the adv search and got “no results found”(tried it this morning as well with same result)……same exact inputs I had used before, so go figure.

PS..I’ve always said I should hire out to SW companies as I am so not good at this stuff, I’ll come across some step that was missed/unclear or some other problem. I can safely say that I have never purchased any devise that had “plug and play” SW and not had to get their tech support people involved to get it to work. Now you know what you are dealing with……

Paul, for its worth I tried the above procedure, but couldn’t get past the first step which is ..click on the Full Reply Editor icon. When I click on it I don’t get the window “Image Properties”, I just get another blank reply window. Is there any way to make the process simpler? I can post pics on other websites with a 1,2,3 process. 1. click on the reply window and write what you want and move the cursor to where you want to insert the pic in the post, 2. click on attachment icon or attach pic icon, 3. select the pic from my pic file by double clicking on it and it is inserted in the reply.

Finally got my Forever Sharp steering wheel mounted. Looks great. You’ll have to take my word for it as I can’t remember how to post a pic.

Bill, did you have any issues with connecting the VW speedo cable to the Dolphin speedo?

Bill, I checked out the Dolphin gauges. Looks like very good prices for a set. Were there any issues with speedo cable connections, oil pressure sender, etc.?

But John, you are sooooo close!! I hate to see you pack it in now. I think all this will be forgotten when you resolve these last few things. Good luck either way.

Ed, is there a pic of this mod. It sounds a lot easier than moving the ebrake handle having to cut and clamp the cables as others have done.

Thanks. Guess I’ll never learn the “tricks” for a successful search. I’m use to typing in a key word or words and getting all posts that contain that word or words.
