  • I proceeded with the install of the disk brake conversion kit yesterday and was pleasantly surprised at how easy the whole process was.  Until I went to bolt on the wheel.  Turns out the caliber casting is proud of the face of the rotor and as such will not allow the wheel to turn.  So I have the option of buying a wheel spacer and longer lug bo…[Read more]

    Tom

I tried using the lower cost LEDs like these but did not have much success.  These cost about $10 CAD
I then bought the $30 LEDs that look like these, which use all the diodes whether energized by the parking light or signal light.  Difference being that there is either a resistor or some diodes in series to drop the voltage into the parking l…

I had the dual filament bulbs with the opposing pins versus the offset pins on an 1157. I tried modifying a 1157 by grinding off one pin and putting a drop of solder on the casing to duplicate the Lucas bulb. It worked for awhile put eventually failed. So I removed the bulb holder and installed a 1157 holder. Was then able to use the LEDs in lieu…[Read more]

The 1157 LEDs are Light Emitting Diodes with either a two bank or single bank of diodes, one bank used for parking lights and both used when the brakes are applied. The one bank set up uses all the LEDS for both functions but there must be a built in resistor in the parking light circuit as the LEDs are not as bright. Also as noted they will only…[Read more]

  • Here are the pics of the new dash that will be installed when the weather improves

The wiring for the dash with colour coding for polarity and numbers as per electrical connections in build book.  Only real problem was with the LED indicator lights, the housing was not robust and had to hot glue the wires to the the bayonet connections
    Instead of…

  • I just finished making a new dash out of solid black walnut finished with six coats of Sikkens Cetol oil based finish. I have replaced all the gauges with 4.5″ Speedhut speedo and tach. Installed VDO white face Royale gauges for fuel, temp, oil pressure and voltage. I had the benefit of the electrical connection diagrams from the original build…[Read more]

  • While you may consider your actions stupid I prefer to view your post as a learning experience for those of us who carry out our own repairs. One, when dealing with electrical components, polarity of connections can be critical so if unsure take pic before you start the replacement and then compare to the finished work paying attention to placement…[Read more]

  • Think that many in the northern climes suffer from separation anxiety in the winter when the TDR is in hibernation. We look with envy at our brothers in the south who get to use their TDRs all 12 months of the year. Mine is waiting for install of front disk brakes, new walnut dash, new vinyl and carpet. Once temp gets above 0 degrees C will…[Read more]

  • Suspect shoulder belt may be uncomfortable unless your left shoulder is below level of bench back seat. In most modern vehicles the shoulder connection is adjustable in vertical plane to accommodate height of drivers. Maybe a 5 point harness with straps going over both shoulders parallel to one another will provide the additional safety you are looking for

Can you elaborate on “ I adapted a “Walking Foot” for better sewing the heavy Vinyl”  I am using a Singer from 1940 with standard foot and it will not take foot from wife’s 1970 vintage Singer.  Problem  encountered was with standard foot the vinyl with foam glued to back will not advance without pulling and stitch count goes from 5 to 10+ per…

Steve. If thickness of fibreglass dash is the same thickness of body e.g 3/16 ” then only issue you may encounter will be whether shafts on switches are long enough to extend through fibreglass and overlay of wood dash. I started with rough sawn 5/4 walnut and with thickness planer was able to reduce thickness to 3/4″ so that I could reuse most of…[Read more]

In spite of your advice, as the car was running fine when I bought it in Sept except for the clutch cable that became detached on the last run of the year, my plan was to garage it in Nov and work on interior throughout the winter.  Thus far have built a new dash from black walnut with VDO and Speedhut gauges. (Thanks Edsnova for the advice…

GeorgeDo you have a brand name or a manufacturer for the product. We do not have Ace hardware stores in Canada. I am replacing my dash and could use the product you have described to finish the edge

Royal, was looking for a steering wheel without dish offset but as I have signal light switch on steering column it has a bend in it that would prevent zero offset wheel from being used. As signal switch is brand new and appears to be made of aluminum I am reluctant to cut it and re-weld (fact that I have had little success in welding aluminum may…[Read more]

I have a similar problem being 6′ plus and 230   Right now I have the seats out and was trying to figure out how to make adjustments to seat height and set back for the back that would move me back from 3″ dish steering wheel. Removed 2″ spacers that had been put under fibreglass seat frame as line of sight with them in had my head looking over th…[Read more]

  • I share the same concern as Bob re anchoring the enclosure I had a 12×20 portable garage with 12″ screw anchors at each corner. First winter storm tore the poly tarp and steel conduit structure off the anchors and wrapped everything around hydro pole and took out service to house. Had to move tractor and ATV out of the garage to make room for…[Read more]

  • If you do not have a VOM you can use your test light instead by just reversing the leads. Connect one to the + post on the battery and the probe the ground connections at the LED and the driving lights. Only problem I have with using test lights is that you are creating a parallel circuit and can sometimes be misled by the results

  • You noted that the LED on the switch was not powering on as it should when driving light switch turned on. Assuming power + to LED is common to driving lights it sounds like either switch is defective or power wire to switch has fault. You can use test light to verify if you are getting power to switch and also test that contact in switch is…[Read more]

BobCan you tell me the make and size of your speedo and tach. They appear to be 4-5 inch in diameter and if so are exactly what I am looking for. Tried doing search for Vintage speedo but could not find anything that matched. They look like the VDO Royale series which is what I have ordered for temp/fuel/press gauges but VDO does not make speedo…[Read more]
