Mine has all but stopped doing that since I set the idle. I believe it was running way too rich before, and that contributed to it. Your mileage may vary. But it might do to tune her up, in order:1. check valve tappet clearance and adjust as needed2. set the timing3. adjust the idle and carb mixture

Okay…here are the wire wheels photo, a 52TD that was in the show, and a Ghia with some nice looking cooling air hoses from the fan housing to the heater boxes.

Wire Wheels…set of five, 72 spoke wire wheels with Dunlop tube tires with everything shown here. Center pieces fit 4-lug VW drums. Price qouted was $200 for everything. For Co…

Went to the VW car show in Chattanooga today. Scored some parts that I needed and there was a guy selling 72(?) spoke  wire wheels with knock off tool for $200. I’ll post the pictures after a bit along with the contact info. I would have gotten them but I think to rechrome them will cost more than new. The set is 5, 14-inch wheels with tires and…[Read more]

If you pull a wheel off your car you can measure the back spacing & get a pretty good idea how well the new ones would fit. Get the back spacing for the new wires, and the width of those, and compare to the width and back spacing you have now.

    schu,

They come in regular off set and reverse off set.  The reverse will sitck out of the fenders, thats the look I have now with my orig basket wires.  When I order mine I want to get regular ones hopefully putting the tires inside the wheel wells.  I’m still trying to fine out if they will fit, my mechanic friend something about make sure the…

  •      A cold compression test is certainly better than no test at all and would give a good indication of an engine problem that requires top end work.

You might not want to test Briget if she is running well.  MiGi was running well but I decided to run a compression test and discovered that #1 cyl was very low.  Didn’t sleep well until I pul…

  • AH, OK. I thought not.And that cool plugs/hot test paradox is just one of several, isn’t it. I ran a compression test a few years back on the Mercury outboard that came with my boat. Supposedly it was a runner; I should’ve done the test before I shelled out the $1,000 for the boat. One cylinder gave zero (0) compression. I never tested Bridget’s…[Read more]

Smitty, thanks for the lead.  Unfortunately they are out of stock so I guess they go on my wish list and I’ll just run with what I have until…..

  • Roy I used the LED Retro fit kit from Mid America MotorWorks. They are very bright and pretty easy to install.

Montie,I think those may be the wheels I have on mine – I think I paid about 350.00 to my door at the time. They told me it would fit the 4x 130mm, but it was not so – I had to have a local machinist re-drill my rotors/hubs for 50.00 total. They work real nice on my ride and I like them – the off set is wrong if they are to fit under the fenders.…[Read more]

Happy to hear you were satisfied with the heads, sorry to here of the mishap.
Just a tip for anyone in the future I did not use or need a ring compressor when I put mine toghether.Ther is a slight taper on the case side of the cylinder,so I loaded the piston in the jug and then installed as a unit, takes some strong fingernails to work the…

  • Ed, If “you can handle the truth” here it is as I know it.  Yes, in an ideal world, you should be able to calculate compression ratio from the pressure you get in a compression test.

BUT, this is not an ideal world!
There are too many variables: the RPM at the time of the test depending upon the oil weight, ambient temperature, how good of a…

Rockyx, Looks great, just like your other work.  I used the same ring compressor that you did, worked good also.  My rebuild of recent went well and I now have about 750 miles on my new engine without a hitch.  Seems to be running smoother each day and idle speed has crept up.  I don’t know how you did it without an engine stand, might be an age…[Read more]

I think I found all the screws. Are there any hidden ones?

Smitty, I think I like your LED light solution.  Sounds like a set it and forget it solution.  LED’s seem to run forever without burning out.  Are they bright enough?  I wouldn’t want anything dimmer than what I have (1158 tail and 1157 brake & turn  I think – hard to read)

  • I put led lights in my tai kites.Ran the wires out the hole and filled the hole with silicone.works fine so far.
