Mark, a few more thoughts. First, lets agree that the German engineers were pretty darn smart in their design of this engine. However, the average high temp in Berlin during the summer is about 70F. The average high in Phoenix the average summer high temp is 100F+/-. Your engine is going to run hotter (about 30F) than in northern lati…[Read more]

I bought a remote oil cooler for additional cooling, but finding space for it will be a challenge. The dog house shroud is about $90, an expense I wasn’t planning, but sounds like it will be worthwhile.

Mark, a dog house is most definately a better setup. If you are going oversize (as you are) you most definately should have a dog house. Not having the fins would certainly hurt. I personally think that you would best benefit (for the $) by putting on a remote cooler. Most VW TDs run all the stock VW sheet metal but there is no seal betwe…[Read more]

Last night I saw the cylinders (“jug”) added, but again it was too dark for photos. I will take some pictures on Saturday morning. It’s beginning to look like a completed engine.

Paul… You are in our prayers. Although we have never met other than the connection on this forum, I understand the loss you are experiencing. I went through that with the loss of my mom a few years ago. But the pain of losing her will go away and be replaced with warm memories. And she will never be very far away.

From the Speedster site: original block of 40 rooms all booked up. More rooms to be set aside for Speedster/Spyder/MG peeps today or tomorrow. Apparently they’re honoring the rate anyway.

Thought I’d bring you up to date. I’ve decided that for less than the price of a fillup, I’d just install a new oil pump and see what that does for my pressure. I have convinced myself that my old pump is part of my low oil pressure problem. We’ll see. Christmas expenses have pushed my 3487 exhaust with spin on filter to later. FYI I have…[Read more]

HAR! Roy. One project at a time. I did install the Gene Berg oil temp dipstick late last season (thanks once again, Schu, for selling it), and so now I’ll at least know if/when she runs hot. Next up on that engine is setting the carb right so she’s not so damn rich–maybe then I’ll get better than the 24 mpg I’ve gotten since I got the car 2…[Read more]

Back when I was driving aircooled VWs, I regularly put 100k on engines, including 2 vans. I dropped the screen, torqued the heads and adjusted the valves at every 3000 mile oil change. It can be done. I’d put a spin on filter on one today. It’s a belt and suspender thing. It even acts like an oil radiator.
Has anyone checked the ther…[Read more] -

Ed, Since there are so many of us with a similar interest in a 3487 with a spin on filter, and you have a 3487 installed. And since you expressed an interest in a spin on filter adapter, wouldn’t it make most sense for you (since you are still gainfully employed) to buy and install one and then let us know how it went and what it did to your oil…[Read more]

The previous suggestions are all good ones and will probably provide a cure. Another, but not as likely culprit might be an unvented tank. Vacuum builds as fuel level goes down until the pump (which is meant to push, not pull) doesn’t receive an adequate supply.

Ed – with the EMPI 3487 muffler can you still use the heater boxes? You’d think that here in GA I wouldn’t need them but a typical winter we get down to the 30s during the day and 20s at night and heat is a nice thing to hve driving to worlk in the early mornings and colder winter days.
