Great result Rollie. The improvement is likely a combo of the oil change and the exhaust change. But yes. I think the extractors could have created your heat problem. Hold you hand next to the new muffler after a long run and you’ll see how hot it gets. Moving that heat down and away from the engine wasa good thing!

Good idea Dan. Of course once the Harley mirror goes on the car, then come the tattoos, beard, leathers, doo rag, excessive drinking….Lord knows what else.

It is something I would do…at least until I started paying someone to mow my lawn so I could have my weekends back! But this wasn’t me. I am, however, protecting the name and reputation of the real culprit.

Hi Mel, I pulled up the site and those are great looking mirrors but very high $. It appears to me that by where they mount would interfere with the side curtains .You could make a bracket which would attach to the lower windshield post bolt and extend just to the front of the post . You could then use a clamp on mirror or drill a hole in the…[Read more]

Hi Mel.
I tried a windshield mounted rearview mirror (glued to the glass) to repalce the dashmoutned rearview mirror. It vibrated so much it was essentially worthless.
Mounting to the frame might be better, but I think they would have to be mounted low on the frame, like where it is bolted through the body.
I replaced the two fender mirrors with…[Read more] -

Hi guys,
Thanks for the responces. I think I’m gonna like it here. Gotta get tires on Mon. and then next weekend is devoted to getting ready for paint. Brian,
Just curious about the “twitchy” steering. I think the Chevettes have a “rag joint” that connects to steering column to the Rack/Pinion steering. Mine is a Ford Mustang front end and that rubber/plastic joint disintegrated making the steering like a stick in a fish bowl. Easy and very cheap fix. Could be your problem?
Good luck!

These VW engines are air-cooled and have large clearances when cold. therefore VW’s used different viscosity depending on ambient tempertures. Warm weather I used 20w-50. Cold (below 35) I used 10x-40. Contrary to all wives tails, synthetic is best.
In addition, today’s oils have no ZDDP (Scuff Package). This eats up flat tappet cams. If the SAE…[Read more] -

John,
Sounds like you have made some great progess getting this car on the road. The twitchy stearing can be resolved by doing the appropiate alignment. There are some web sites that can guide you as to how you can do a home alignment with some simple tools. Sounds like you’re close to having a very nice pute-pute. - Load More
