Paul,
I thought I was in the TD Registry when I filled out the membership application on this site. However, I don’t see my name listed. When I click on the if not “click here”, I just get the list. How do I register? -

Yes. You only need one sync tool.

Unlike the Honda 4 cylinder bike with 4 carbs, the VW with duals are sync’d one at a time. Therefore, I will only need 1 tool? I don’t mind the extra expense for the right tool, I just hate to buy the wrong one first. I knew with all the dual carbs out there someone had the right answer. I really appreciate it.

Hi Bill,
I’ve seen lovers and haters of both Unisync (clear tube with the floating red ball) and Snychrometer (the one looking like a boat compass). Here’s one comment, from a member of http://www.speedsterowners.com: “….the unisyn s–ks! Spend a couple extra bucks and get a synchrometer: http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=ACC-C10- 7…[Read more] -

Having just finished my car, (I have the Duraspark system) and being an old school kind of guy, I just could NOT get my car started with that darned ecm unit. I finally found THE go-to guy in the area and he started my car within twenty minutes. I just hate it when that happens! The key is the two wires coming out od the Duraspark, Red and white,…[Read more]

Are you looking for the measurement for a swing-arm? Or for an IRS? It may be the same. But I figured I’d double check what you are looking for.
Just a reminder oldbuzz….I don’t see you on the Registry list. Link is in my signature. -

Ringo, I saw some of those sites about the duraspark and I’m sure that’s a solution. For those unaware duraspark was Fords anwser to the old point and condenser issue. Apparently you can go to a salvage yard and get what you need. I saw the Pertronix as more of a turn key solution ie take out the points, bolt the new module in and splice so…[Read more]

Come on Guys! I’m dealing with a large group of VW specialist here and no one wants to volunteer the answer. I used a carb stick on my 4 cyl Honda Magna and it was fairly simple. Connect a vaccuum tube to each carb and reach the highest level of mercury in each of the 4 tubes. I’m sure dual carb VW’s sre similar, I just wanr some input on which o…[Read more]

That’s more like it! Three weeks is easy when you’re dealing with wiring. Nice, well marked kits and a second set of eyes/hands/brains are the only way to go!
I feel better about my skills now.

Man, I HATE it when my links are no longer active. The sites with the duraspark upgrade are still there, but talk about the need for a duraspark distributor. If there is 3 wires now coming out of the dissy then the duraspark is addable without a new dissy. The MSD site still has wiring hookup diagram for the pertronix and in fact the MSD m…[Read more] -

Most stock VW tanks were right at 10.5 gal. This is trusting my memory, so someone may have a more accurate answer.
There are several good books on VWs that are well worth the purchase. John Muir’s “How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive ” , and the Bentley publishers Volkswagen Service Manuals. both are available on Amazon. I’d get the Mui…[Read more] -

If you want to get all the advantages of electronic ignition with the pertronix you can add a stock Duraspark module, or an MSD, or both to get the max spark obtainable. Takes just a little wiring under the hood. Well worth the effort since the pertronix unit by itself doesn’t increase the spark that much but does do away with point p…[Read more] -

Rob,
My 1974 V6 has electronic ignition, although according to the manuals, it was not available until 1975. Mine is a KEM unit. Not sure if it is OEM or not. Supposedly, the big advantage (other than no more burned out points) was a hotter spark that improved performance using today’s (crappy) low octane gas. No problems with mine so far.

When I say easy as pie, I mean that it took two of us three weeks to properly wire the car. Soldered joints, shrink wrap, try, confirm operation, then move on. Every wire was labeled, such as left front turn signal, every 6 to 8 inches. My buddy and I were meticulous about how we did the rewire, and that eliminated all those ugly bugs that usually…[Read more]

Been to every auto parts store in town. No one can find them. Started looking for dress up covers first, then decided to find a pair and send them off to get chromed. Still no luck. Could send these off to get chromed but am afraid they would get lost in the mail then I don’t know what I would do then. Besides, don’t want the car laid up for that…[Read more]
