My Dad mentioned some sportscars have a “visor” behind the drivers bench seat maybe 6″ above the seat all the way across. I still haven’t seen any examples, but he said that this “visor” really cuts down the wind. I don’t know why, but it has something to do with a change in the aerodynamics. He always wanted to test it with plywood first cut at…[Read more]

  • Wow, you my friend, are an encyclopedia! Thanks for helping me with this, I have been going bonkers trying to figure out what goes there! I have no Idea why it’s there, but I can tell you when it’s not It serves as an oil sprinkler! My garage is a mess!!!! Ughhh

  • Geoff;
When I got back to work it bugged me that my quick inspection and check of the manual didn’t explain what the bolt (seal?) did!
A longer look and a more critical reading of the manual told me……………ABOSOLUTLEY NOTHING!!!
There is no mention of this item anywhere in the written directions but it’s visible in 2 of the break dow…[Read more]

  • Thanks sooooooo much Ringo, I will try as soon as I get home.   You rock!

  • Geoff;Went home at lunch and took a look.  If you mean a hole 4″ directly in back of the oil filter, 45 degree slant, there is most certainly supposed to be a bolt there!Hex head, probably a 7/16 or 1/2.(?)  The threads are probably deeper inside than you can feel with your finger.Time for a trip to the auto store to get trial size bolts.  Si…[Read more]

  • James – You’re already drinking the kit car Kool-aid. So you may as well wash it down with a shot of Mystery Oil.Mark – Should we add incredibly good looking to our signatures?

  • You may be right Rich, the engine coughs and bucks when it does start but I haven’t noticed the smell of gas. I will check it out and let you know. Thanks for the thinking.

PS; I feel like I must have been old when dirt was young.

  • Mark,
I tasted the Mystery Oil…no wonder it lowered your Cholesterol , it will lower all sorts of stuff . Leaves an after taste you just can’t get rid of.  puy puy  yuk yuk……………….nice color though! My engine likes, similar to good old homecooking for the mechanicals with a dose of colon cleanser in the mix.

  • Rich,
I do love the inexpensive parts for these cars. I forgot what the fuel pump was, but it was like pocket change. Speaking of swine flu….right now, in Memphis, is the International Bar B Que contest. My office is downtown, one block from the river where the contest is being held. Thousands of people, miles of booths and competitors from…[Read more]

  • Bgayler…I’m a Streetrodder too (1940 Ford Tudor Sedan). Pics in my gallery.
I put 4 wheel discs on the VW based TD now owned by Bill Collins when I refurbed it. The stock master cylinder worked OK, there is not a lot of weight to stop.
However a few years ago, VW Trends ran an article on how to modify and mount a Vanagon master cylinder…[Read more]

  • No, I’ve never seen one in person and from the starting bid…looks like I’l never own one either!
It looks like a middle aged TD…a little stout around the middle!

  • Paul is right…INCREDIBLY good looking
Tha hose Paul described it the filtered intake for the crankcase ventalation system. The hose I am talkng about is from the PCV valve itself (mounted in the valve cover) to a port on the carb base or intake manifold. This collapses if it’s old and soft (unlike Paul and I) from the direct vacuum port it’s…[Read more]

Bill, On this forum there no such thing as a stupid question. I only knew the answer because I had a car with overiders. Keep us up to date on your project.

  • Pretty funny Ringo….Swine Flu
Maybe James’ Engine Block is made of “Pig” Iron
James, you’re running out of “stuff” to check. I guess it could be a badly scored cylinder wall causing friction (let’s hope not). Possibly something intermittently jammed between the flywheel and housing?
Maybe if you loosen the nut on the rear shock absorber?
    I’m…[Read more]

  • I didn’t look at it. I will definitely check it out.
    Ringo, I think you’re right…swine flu….
There is something else that I forgot to mention because I was so shocked when the crankshaft did rotate. There is the normal resistance when turning the crankshaft with pistons attached and the plugs out, except at one point. The resistance is…[Read more]

  • Hi Phil,
Doubt that it’s vapor lock unless you have a really hot running engine. Do you get gas smell and black smoke when you do get it started? Wondering the float in the carb is working properly and if it’s flooding after you shut it down. A good way to deal with it if it is flooding is to hold the accelerator all the way to the floor (don’t…[Read more]

  • Any signs of wear on the gear at the bottom of the distributor?

  • James,Let’s see, the oil pump puked and now the engine turns?  Sounds like swine flu to me.Ringo

Hi Phil, Welcome to the group! If it’s a new problem it could be the winter blend gas boiling up now that warmer weather is here.  If so, some additive could help until you put summer blend gas in.  If not the blend, you may need to insulate some of the fuel lines.Ringo

  • Thanks for you reply. I’m spoiled by the quick stopping ability of disc brakes. (A necessity not an option in Houston traffic.)
