Why not convert to an Alternator? All of the VW vendors offer these kits that include everything you need except the “stand” which is simple to swap. It eliminates the external voltage regulator too. Alternators are much more efficient too.
I’d also check the cooling fan for cracks around the center of the hub. They are very common…and a…[Read more] -

Neil,
If your car is Chevette based, the steering wheel adapter is a standard GM unit. Grant Steering wheels offer a myriad of designs

I used a Grant wheel and billet adapter on my Chevette based BCW TD. It’s similar to Geoff’s. You can order their products via Summit or Jegs as well as locally from your area Speed Shop. -

Oh yeah…and I changed the topic from “help” to “Engine Code and Generator Questions”Why?Well…all our posts become a permanent part of the tdreplica history, unless deleted by one of the admins. So they are searchable and readable “forever”It wouldn’t be much help if we had 10,000 postings, all with the topic of “help”.We suggest that topics be…[Read more]

Hi Steve & PeggyYour engine (AD38058D) was built up on a replacement block (i.e. one that was not supplied with a new car. If built up stock, it is a 1600cc motor, probably cast in the late 60s early 70s.Scroll down on this site and you will find the AD prefix code.http://www.type2.com/bartnik/enginecodes.htm

Hey Ron,
Yes what Paul said is correct. The kit manufacturers were not interested in safety or ride, just ride height. The “cut one tube and turn it” method of modifying the VW twin front bean is to get the correct ride height only. It doesn’t change the spring rate.
Shocks only dampen spring movement. It’s the spring rate that is causing your…[Read more] -

Mine is the Ford 2.3L, probably from a 1974 Pinto. You’ve got a V6 – sweet! I see more red replicas than the white. I think sportscars just look better in red. I have a 67 Datsun fairlady convertible in red with white top.
I am gathering up photos that I took during the rebuild / restoration. I’ll post some that do show how far back the shifter…[Read more] -

Hi James,
Very nice car! Mine looks the same, but in Red. Also a FiberFab, but mine has a 2.8 liter V6 Ford engine w/ 4spd. I think I am the only member with this config.
I don’t have the problem with the shift being too far back. Wonder what’s different. Is your’s Ford or GM?
Enjoy the Ride!’

Mine is a four speed manual. The only complaint I have is the stick shift is too far back and I have to hold my elbow upward to shift without hitting the seat back going to second and fourth. Other than that she flies like the wind and sounds great.

Ron,Suspension stiffness comes primarily from spring rates (or torsion bars in a VW), not the shocks.Mark (pinkmg) has posted excellent advice on how to soften the front suspension on a VW based TD. Search for “vw beams” and open MGTD Kit car suspension or Suspension/Pink MG. Mark also commented on springs for front engine cars (Chevette or Pin…[Read more]

You’ve come to the right place for help and info. You’re gonna have a lot of fun finishing her out.
Get a copy of “How to Keep Your VW Alive” by John Muir. I’ve had 4 VWs in the past and my copy is almost worn out from using it. The VW has some different needs from the Scout and at times takes a different mindset.…[Read more] -

Hi Wolfpow, Sorry for the loss of your wife’s Dad,however fixing up what was his car will help keep his memory in your hearts. The car looks like a Daytona MiGi to me and it looks to be in good condition. Sometime these cars need more time than money, sometime it’s the other way too,but seldom can you get by without a little of both.I know much…[Read more]
