KentT replied to the topic sorry, typo, it's a 912 swap with a 5 speed! in the forum VW Based Kits 11 years, 3 months ago
The Porsche and VW Bus trannies are physically much bigger (and stronger) than the Type I. You might run into space issues under the rear “luggage area” behind the seat, so fiberglass work MAY be required. Perhaps more significant, the shift rod sits higher in the tranny than on a Type I, and most people who convert use some king of off-set c…[Read more]

I’d repeat everything in my post except the “have to swap the ring & pinion.”
Again, it’s a dream rig. The five speed alone would make yours an elite runner. But I would caution anyone to learn more about the ins and outs before attempting it.I have to ask:1. What does he mean by “modified” Type 4? What are the modifications, who did them, and what… -

Upper radiator bracket is done.
It’s aluminum angle, trimmed, bent and drilled. I only bent it a little, but I did heat it up with a torch first because I am that paranoid. Now just gotta get some captivated nuts on it for the fan, make a couple angle brackets low down for the fan, and then it’s on to the shroud.I think I’ll stop here and start the wires. -

Thanks. I will check the rocker and pushrods. It is very loud. I had just adjusted the valves and it was running so well it really has me bummed out. If I do have it rebuilt I will probably jump it to a 1776 or 1835. Maybe I’m just looking for an excuse. I will repost what I find. Thanks for the imput.

edward ericson replied to the topic 914 engine and transaxle swap?? in the forum VW Based Kits 11 years, 3 months ago
Would have to be modified substantially as the 914 was a mid-engine car. Laying the setup in a TD would put the Type 4 engine right about where your butt is supposed to be.
That said,1. The Type 4 is a stronger, more durable engine. Worth having if you can, and2. The 914 transaxle is a 5-speed, which is awesome, and can be converted for use in a… -

Eddy, I made my seats like Dale (Schu) described in General Discussion “Seat Fix” posted March 17 2011.
I used more webbing than Dale, 5 across and 3 fore to aft. Foam used was 3″ thick “Luxury Foam” topped with 2″ “Memory Foam”. Descriptions of the foam can be found at http://www.foamforyou.com/Foam_Specs.htmFor the seat back I used 3″ thick… -

Like George said, Get that engine out, you’ll be glad you did! I can hardly imagine getting it back together with no leaks otherwise!

Schu, on mine it might be theoretically possible. But, I think it would be so much harder than pulling the engine, I wouldn’t try. Just my 2¢.

This is for Flash,You may have a centered pinion yoke, sometimes ? one axle side is longer than the other. My 8 inch is that way so when it was narrowed I asked for centered pinion resulting in one axle longer than the other.I’ll post a photo on tommietd laterMelvin
