I liked james’ comment on non-stainless screws. My migi had no stainless screws anywhere and jus a few brass ones. Even the snaps for the tonneau were plated ferrous material. I’ve been replace-ing everything that shows with stainless. The galvanized 1/4-20 screws that hold the whole thing together don’t rust but they are not very pretty after a…[Read more]

I replaced my 74 dual master cyl this w/e because it leaked down under pressure, like when you have to stop real fast! I bled it really good on the bench then plugged all the holes and just pulled one plug at a time and put in each line one at a time. I didn’t even have to bleed the system when i got it all hooked up. This is a measy job, ho…[Read more]

Most solenoids/relays can be fixed by taking them apart and flipping the contact disc over and turning the bolts that are the contacts 180 degrees. I did one on my garden tractor last sunday!

Does anyone know if you can replace the head gaskets when you slide (wiggle) the head back that inch or so? I’ve had limited success reusing head gaskets. Does VW use copper gaskets or any at all?

Hi
I installed the 3417 with 1 outlet pipe (a very long pipe!) Might need a red flag on that tailpipe it’s sooo long…
The sound is great, nice and quiet until you punch it then it has a nice throaty sound.
I did have clearance problems so I moved the fiberglass cover back about 5/8 inch and it just clears now. Had to redill one hole and add…[Read more] -

I discovered a trick when I first got my MiGi. I f its running too lean you can manually richen the mixture by pushing the lever on the accelerator pump. It will run smoothly for a few seconds then get rough again. I have dual carbs so as long as one is working you can play with the other one. I found the passage to the 3 intermediate fuel supply…[Read more]

Hi Dennis
Got the gift certificates.
Thanks
PS: How does the speedo work

Hi Dennis
The speedo was locked up which will twist off the cable. You can buy the cable inner part at most auto supply stores and cut to your required length. It comes with a little tool to crimp the end on and works great and saves you the work and expense of changing the whole thing (assuming that it’s still in good shape).
Thanks

It looks like the engine cover is hitting the pre-heater boxes above the muffler. You can throw these boxes away and get more clearance. Also, the empi mufflers (avail from partsdoghouse and Cip1) give you more room under the cover. Read the muffler thread.
The height of the engine cooling fan is the real limiting factor. My Migi has the cover…[Read more] -

I helped out my nephew a few years back by driving a 66 corvair convertible from new mexico to Minnesota on New Years day and trading it for a very nice ’63 corvair coupe which was my old car in the 60’s. The trip back to California in the 63 Corvair was not without some excitement, but we made it and I still have the ’63 and love it.
I would…[Read more] -

I fixed it for you. The only tough part is uncrimping the bezel which holds the glass on the front of the speedo. Inside, you had the same problem as I did with mine. The little drive gear gets stuck due to lack of lubrication. The worm gear on the spinning main shaft then simply screws itself out pulling itself out of the spinning magnet. Then…[Read more]

Hi Dbrock
I can repair your speedofor you for free! The shops don’t like to spend the time with the crimped on front bezel. That was one of the first repairs I had to do on my MiGi! It took about an hour and was fun for me!

Thanks for all the info on mufflers. I want something just loud enough to hide the sewing machine sound of the lifters! That’s a whole ‘nuther thread, however!

Hi Guys
Just one note on Grabby brakes after many theories have been proven false.
ONCE A BRAKE SHOE HAS GOTTON GREASE OR BRAKE FLUID ON IT IT WILL BE TROUBLE. Most commonly grabbing or locking up. Drum brakes are “self activating” which means the forward rotation of the drum puts pressure on pivot pin causing the shoe to pivot toward the drum and…[Read more] -

Hi Paul
There is one thing you can try before digging into the engine. The valve could be stuckdue to a build–up of carbon or some other stuff (like aluminum-which you would see on the spark plug also, which would mean the piston has gone). If the plug looks ok try this:
1) put the #4 piston in the down position
2) remove the rockers and valve…[Read more] -

I have cut 20″ blades in half and made 2 nice 10″ ers fur the price of one. 10 ” is a bit long so I tailor them to the position where I’m using them. Not all blades can be cut down without falling apart, however.

Hi Paul,
Sorry to hear about your problem.
I blew a fan belt in Tulsa Oklahoma a few years back and noticed the alternator not charging right away and incorrectly assumed it was a bad alt.and kept on going. When I noticed the cyl head temp going towards 600 degrees f i stopped the car but let the engine idle. As soon as I saw the broken belt I…[Read more] -

Hi
Does the Bugpack #2031-13 retain the heater boxes? And how quiet is it?
