Well, if someone buys those thinking they are 60 spokes, I guess they’ll probably pay him a 20 percent premium on their own bid price too. It’s only fair.

Well, crap. I can’t find my notes. But this was all recent and my memory is pretty good. So here’s what I found re wire knockoffs to be adapted to the 4-bolt VW:1. The most likely candidate for a legit kit that’ll maybe fit is the Triumph TR3/4 hubs with 4.5-inch Dunlop wires.I found them available at Rimmer Brothers for–here’s the link–about…[Read more]

Scott, check my post from 7:15 pm yesterday for a link to a diagram of how your brake distribution/warning switch goes. It’s from the Auto Zone web site, but looks probably right.By the way, you kick ass, build-wise. I am in awe.

Good info, Roy.$2,000–if we can get eight takers. That’s just about way too rich for my blood. At least for now. I have worked out a fitment scheme and a source for 60-spoke Rudge splined kits of five for about $1200 plus shipping. These are painted Dunlaps, made in India, needing tubes, etc. As you said, by the time you’re all done with these…[Read more]

Yeah, venting the fuel tank to the air was SOP until about 1973 or 4.Charcoal canister after that, and then came The Era of Spaghetti Pipes Out Yer Gas Tank, which we are still in. Glad to hear the brake line thing is solved, conceptually.

Here’s a diagram of the brake warning blah blah blah. Looks like you’re about right. Not for sure though. I’s you I’d check to see if fluid put in at D comes out at E, and fluid dropped in B comes out A & F. That’d confirm your suspicion.

Great story, Roy. Glad you’re running cool, and that’s good info re the thinner oil leading to cooler temps.I do think your vacuum leaks might have played a role in your higher temps though. Suspect the lean condition in #1 was cancelled by the loss of compression, but the intake air leak probably gave you at least two other lean jugs.Congrats on…[Read more]

More fun–and maybe a bit more pocketbook-friendly. MG fans have these guys. Not sure if they’re still around; believe the whole company was for sale a short while ago. Miata-based, I believe. My fave are these Jag C-cars. Suffolk in GB (and Proteus) seem to have the thing wrapped. But a bit spendy for my wallet at $110,000+ per copy, less…[Read more]

Yeah. I swapped out batteries and tested the batteries with another volt meter. Got 13.2 or so on both with the engine running. I seem to have low voltage to the instruments, as read on this meter. I think it’s the meter. But I have not yet pulled it to test it directly at the battery.

Got the switch for the fog light working, aimed the light and wrapped the wires under the hood. Here are the headlight relays (left two) and the new fog light relay tucked in under the steering shaft.
Now I’m under the dash again, trying to clean everything up and maybe find out why my volt meter has consistently read about 2 volts low since I…[Read more]

Mark, don’t take off the valve cover yet. Your spark timing may indeed be a little off after installing a new Pertronix. Changing from points to the Pertronix caused me to have to turn the distributor about 20 degrees in order to get her to fire up the first time. Switching back to points gave me the same problem in reverse.Do you know how to find…[Read more]

Back when you built yours, Paul, most cars on the road had little better safety protection than our TDs have. Also, 18-year-olds could drink legally, meaning 16-year-olds got a pass at most bars. So everyone who could drive was pretty much drunk. And those who weren’t drunk were coked up. Plus, the end of the world was coming any minute. What were…[Read more]
