Marine stuff is sometimes thicker and stronger. They even make “gold plated” ones but for $7 a terminal color me skeptical.

Welcome, John. You can run heat into the center tunnel or duct it under the seats, or both. Check the assembly manual downloads for notes and diagrams about how the various kit mfgs suggested it be done. Here’s a primer on VW heat, with tips on how to make the stock heater boxes work their best.My car has heat in the tunnel, with 2-inch holes cur…[Read more]

Welcome, Gary. I got my BCW (VW-powered) almost two years ago & have really enjoyed it. There are Chevette gurus out there but you’ll probably find the car to have adequate power. 90 horse goes a long way in a 2000-pound car. Larry is right, the BCW is a quality product. The tail lights are “correct,” for example. The windscreen folds down. You’ll…[Read more]

Can’t top that with any Type 1 VW mill I’ve seen. But there was a blower kit for those too. I’m hoping Bridget’s skin and lines impart all the style I need. More is better though, no doubt.

Asking prices don’t mean much. Would that they were selling prices.

You should be able to do better, Don. I’d say 2-3 inches less column is possible. This is a “classic” (3-bolt) Grant to a Ford Pinto/ Mustang II column, right? This ebay listing looked promising until I realized that the photo is the same as my VW adapter. I think it’s mislabeled. But something like this must exist for your column.

Moss has a kit now. Back in the day, there were two or three major aftermarket kits. Shorrock and Judson are the two I remember. Eaton might have made one.But for the weak crankshafts, the engine was well suited to these. 8-to-1 compression, small valves, etc. Shorrock claimed TDs could achieve a blistering 90 mph with the supercharger bolted on.…[Read more]

Ah well, Schu–have a good trip. I intend to attend the Pumpkin Run, and Karen say’s she’s game. Last possible chance: Nov. 5. Guy Fawkes Day. Stoney used to burn Guy Fawkes in effigy in the P-lot. Probably still does. Weather could be iffy but maybe we’ll get lucky.

Ed,
I will have to skip – I am meeting my Son-in-law in NC to look at some
houses. Hopefully the weather will be good the following weekend and I will
see you in PA. -

Your son is an artist. I’d love to be able to just watch and ask a few questions while he works. Keep going and keep posting. You’re doing great.Uh, one thing about those torsion springs though: I believe you will have to mess with them. Once the kit’s all assembled, the front of your car will be much lighter than a stock Bug. You’ll have too much…[Read more]

There was a substantial ball joint replacement thread on the Speedster site a few months back. Couple things, from memory:1. Pickle fork bj separation on the VW is not advised–harms the BJ as often as not. Same thing with the steering knuckles. I say this as one who used forks on both and ended up replacing all tie rod ends and the BJ dust seals,…[Read more]

I wouldn’t buy a “built” VW engine from an unknown source even if I could hear it run. Close tolerances and lots of potential mistakes amateur builders make that could kill an engine inside of 5000 miles. Just a very different sort of animal than, say, a small block Chevy.I would consider a $50 or $100 running 1600 DP though, just to have a core…[Read more]

Always good advice. My take on the story was that the boilerplate language was as ancient as the automobile models it proscribed.
