Finally got my louvered panel back from Kowalski. It’s not exactly what I had expected, but it’ll do. We had a weekend of unseasonably warm weather so I was able to spend some time beginning this process. The original (too small) engine cooling fan fits comfortably between the air cleaner and firewall and should help expel the heat this thing…[Read more]

Hello Bill Does your windshield fold down? If so, can you provide some detailled photos? I have the brackets and can fabricate the windshield side supports (Moss 408-230 & 240) but I am not sure if the fold-down feature is useful. Is it?

Sorry to reply so late. I have converted mine yet as I was gathering parts. I now have everything I need except glass for the windshield.
I am not sure if building a…

I do have a question for you. Where did you get the big hood vents?
-
The hood louvers I had made by a local hot rod shop. I then just grafted the louver panel into the hood.
-
The sides were made by grinding/routing out the slots, correct?
Did you make a jig?

Welcome to the group, Wheels!
Congrats on an adventurous maiden voyage. Most of us would not do 500 miles on a shakedown run with one of these!
I second the suggestion you come on down to Carlisle PA in mid-May. It’s a pretty big gathering of VW-based kits, most of them Speedster replicas but with a contingent of TDs and others. We rent a block…[Read more]

Great to have a new member. Glad you found a good driver. As Schu suggested, bring her down to the Carlisle show in May. “A splendid time is guaranteed for all.” Looking forward to photos.

Welcome
Cool story – sounds like you found out the hard way the gas gauge was screwed up – anyway neat that you drove it home.
Meet us at Carlisle PA in May – seems you like road trips anyway – a couple of other Canadians have come down in the past.

Very nice, Bill! Nothing so satisfying as tackling a long-put-off project.

Here’s a blog post about the latest tom-foolery.
I’m still making progress on the build, fewer than 75 individual tasks* are left on the punch list.

Just went and measured the summer wheels for the MINI. The backspacing is 5-3/4”. Admittedly, my MINI’s are second generation, but the same aftermarket wheels fit these and the first generation I used to have. I have never seen a MINI with 15’s though. 16, 17 & 18, yes, but not 15.
If you don’t like the fit with the fenders, consider spacers.

Finally getting around to little thing I’ve been putting off.
I managed to get the seat heater panels installed.
Wish I could drive it to see how they work, but I have sent the steering rack out for rebuild. My last drive ended with increasing play in the wheel. Not sure what it is, but I’m sure this had something to do with it.
It’ll be…[Read more]

The grill shell is the hard to get part. For the insert you can go with a set of slats from Moss Motors, or maybe MG Magic has them as mentioned above, of you could make a custom insert out of wire mesh or expanded metal, like a lot of guys did in period.
