Here’s what I did on my Classic Mini. (Used a Brother Co. labelmaker) Looks pretty good, despite unusual numbers, eh? I got tired of multiplying km/hr by 0.6.

Ed, I assume you have Historic plates? This really should not effect you if you remember to always say that you were out for a joy ride vs going to/coming from work. eh?? Sounds like someone at MMVA had nothing to do, so he built a job for himself. I remain a fan of smaller government.

Welcome. I think that your first order of business would be to have someone who is familiar with old Bugs take a close look at the frame for serious rust. It is possible that #1 and #4 are related. Fix #4, your “more significant” problem first.
I would advise buying a copy of “How to keep your Volkswagen alive” by John Muir. Rob & Dave’s VW r…[Read more]

Thanks Kent. Yes, Jack’s TDr is running about as well as a TDr can run. This has been a long drawn out affair where we took our time to get to the finish line. Starting with purchase of a used spare engine, complete teardown of both Jack’s engine, and the spare. Then junking the “new” spare, installing the best of parts that were not bou…[Read more]

Depending on how cock sure, or paranoid, or….whatever you are, you may add to or delete from my list of ready spares always aboard my TDr (I run an electronic Pertronix on MiGI):
Fully ready to be installed distributor with points (set), rotor and cap
Voltage regulator
Condenser
Spare ignition wire
4 spark plugs
20+/- feet of hook up wire…[Read more]

It was (or at least it should have been) almost as quick and simple as Jack’s telling of putting my spare distributor in his TDr, and everything being just ducky. But alas, a few years ago, in our designated Carlisle hotel parking lot, Schu was having trouble getting spark. I offered that I had a complete spare distributor, ready to instal…[Read more]

Super Bummer. Imagine….letting work interfere with TDr play.

Ed’s reasoning that the Brooklands is the reason for Bill’s time improvement is certainly simpler than my suggestions….and the simplest solution is usually the right one.
Maybe Ed meant Occam’s Razor’s edge vs racer’s edge???

Bill, did you make any changes to your TDr’s chassis, tires or drive train? Or, do you attribute your improved times to driving with more practice, skill and derring-do?

Bill, I have to admire your attitude: “I came in last again in Special 2. Damn, its fun. 😀”
I wish (I really do) that I could be happy not winning. It is a character flaw of mine, that I have to be competitive (at least threatening to win) to enjoy whatever I do, whether playing the guitar or the organ, or in sports, or at work, or golf etc…[Read more]

And it starts & idles well. Strong acceleration and runs (as my grandfather used to say) “like a scared rabbit!”.

Stephen, there was a feature on the old site which I miss: there was a listing of the names of those who are currently logged in. A few minutes ago, I responded to a question from a member and I would normally stay logged in (if I knew he was still online) to see if he understood my answer.

Royal replied to the topic VW Oil Change — Special Conditions in the forum VW Based Kits 8 years, 10 months ago
John, you are correct that the oil filter only needs about 1/4-1/2 turn after oiling the rubber gasket. Any tighter than that is only necessary from an “idiot mechanic”.
WRT your problems with the oil drain plate: I do not use any gasket sealer at all and am bone dry underneath. Try threading the nuts onto the studs without the plate. If the…[Read more]

Beautiful!
Coincidentally, early this afternoon before we knew of Steve’s purchase, Happy Jack mentioned to me that he might be interested in buying a Bugatti. His BCW TDr Weber installation is complete (with the exception of a few minor tweaks), but that is Jack’s story so he should tell it.
