I remember that melting lead smell in my grandma’s kitchen, where my uncle Pete was crafting bunker snaggers. “What’s that smell,” I asked.
“Elephant poop,” he replied, without smiling.
I’m sure it exacerbated the inexorable process of dumbening. -

The DDT cloud thing maybe explains what happened to the next generation (mine). DDT. That’s the stuff that made bird eggs soft, right? Maybe did the same thing to our skulls.

Sorry for your troubles, Paul. On the bright side, though, you probably have more miles/days on road with your TD than anyone else on the board. Maybe anyone else on the Earth. You’ll be back.

Keep on, Buzz. I’d be at least as mad as you are. It’ll get done though. Soon, I hope.

Thanks for the input, gents. I think the brake line replacement is in order anyway–they’re certainly old. In addition, the bleeder screw on the grabby brake behaved strangely, dribbling a bit and not squirting like the others. Could be clogged, which means there could be cloggy crap in there behind it, which means, I guess, that similar…[Read more]

There is one and it’s for sale–or maybe already sold. It was on ebay a couple months ago. Had a hotel advertisement magnetic sticker on the “bed,” and the seller claimed the bed was easily removable so the car could be returned to original if desired. I believe it was built in CA in the 1960s or ’70s and eventually–late ’80s maybe?–driven to…[Read more]

That is cool on so many levels. I have actually seen these things apart, and I still never really understood how they worked until now. Thanks, James Cochran!

Or EBay. There was an auto Chevette-based car up last week, I think it came with a spare manual transmission. More than $3k but still. Don’t recall if it sold.

Warped fiberglass? I think the wrapping combined with heat to pull it out of true. The trick will be to get it wrapped and put under pressure and heat enough to “unwarp” it back to how it should be, preferably in less than 25 years. This is my theory. How you do it is a subject for someone who has actual knowledge.

edward ericson replied to the topic Motometer on Ebay in the forum MGTD Kit Parts and other stuff 14 years, 11 months ago
That thing is cool. Stupid question: I know a MotoMeter usually screws into the radiator cap with the bulb just below, taking the temperature of the coolant just below the gauge. So how does this one work, presuming the actual radiator is not the thing this thing sits on?

That could be good news. I’m hoping the spring pressures and tolerances inside my stock 1300 case are not as tight as in a well breathed-on ’67 Firebird. Still. We hot heat and flat tappets. I might look into a case of that Royal Purple. At 2.5 quarts a year that should last me till . . . what? 2015?

My Brother-in-law & his wife & kids came over yesterday. The kids immediately jumped in the car. For about five minutes she was more interesting to them than both Wii “Star Wars” games and the carnival up the street.
Both the bro-in-law and sister-in-law wanted to drive her. I took video with the cell phone during the latter sojourn.
