In this case without a press and the proper tools I think you’d be money and time ahead to have them pressed out and the new ones pressed in. 15 minute job if you know what you are doing and have the proper equip.

Will do Sarge. Going over Friday. Should get to Gulfport around noon. Staying at the Best Western on Hwy 49 just off the interstate next to Hooters. My cell is 225-202-2612. I’ll give you a call when we get in. Be nice to cruise with another TD.

We’ll be going to Fredericksburg next year. However anything over 100 miles I usually trailer the car. I love to cruise in the car but after a long weekend of car showing I appreciate the comfort of climate control, automatic tranny, no wind noise and my XM radio that I can actually hear while underway that my Chevy tow vehicle provides. Hopefully…[Read more]

When you take it in ask the guy to take several pics of the rework and post them. I’m sure everyone would like to keep up with the progress.

Don’t know you but I wish you the best of luck. Sounds like you have a plate full.

If you are not afraid of a lot of work and nasty fiberglass dust you can do all the prep work yourself and just have someone shoot the final paint for you. I don’t know how bad your cracks are but unless they are broken through and even if that’s the case they can still be repaired. A few years back I re-did a fiberglass dune buggy that was full…[Read more]

Tom Colello replied to the topic 1835 cc engine dual carbs in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 2 months ago
Space is my problem with the Allison. The bump out for the spare tire is so small that even a small aftermarket air cleaner hits on one side. In looking at the area under the deck lid I really don’t have room for dual carbs unless they were on very short manifolds. Even then they might not fit. So I’ll stick with a single stock carb. I’m still…[Read more]

I’ve got a 1776 in Winston but running a single carb. Can’t get dual carbs under the deck lid.

Bill, are you going to cruisin the coast in Mississippi by any chance. Houston’s about a 7 hour drive but I can promise you it’s worth the time spent. Be good to cruise with another TD owner.
Do you do any of the TX shows like the classic up in Fredricksburg? -
Tom Colello replied to the topic Steering Wheel Shimmy in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 2 months ago
Thanks Larry. I agree completely. Nothing against TD’s with stock VW slotted rims but I really like the wires on this model car and a true knock off is just icing on the cake in my opinion. They seem to belong there and don’t look at all like an aftermarket add on. I will do my best to keep them from getting any worse than they are and when the…[Read more]

Yep, I’m not to keen on pulling the spokes. I’ll have to do the best I can with the polish bit till I can afford to replace them all together. The rims look good now from a distance but when you get up close the rusted area become very apparent and detract from the overall condition of the car. I have one of those mini balls and power cones.…[Read more]

That’s a great idea Paul on the paint mark. I’ll definately do it next time I take the rim off. In fact I’ll do all 4 like that in case I ever remove the knock off hub from the brake drum on any of the others.
Ed this is the best pic I have of the knock off Spoke rim. This was the day I brought Winston home from Florida. I’ll try to take a more…[Read more] -

Took the car in Friday to get the wheels balanced while on the car. Upon inspection getting the wheel up to speed while off the ground revealed wheel travel up and down indicating something was out of round. We pulled the wheel off and noticed the knock off hub mounted to the brake drum was off center. Unusual cause the holes are over size but the…[Read more]

Tom Colello replied to the topic New Gas Tank in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 2 months ago
I went with as small a tank as I could to preserve some storage space in the trunk. I had it custom made by Boyd Welding in Ocala, Florida. They do have standard sizes but I opted for a custom size. They will build any design you need. They did an excellent job and I highly recommend them. I ordered it on Thursday the 1st and had it in my hands…[Read more]

Tom Colello replied to the topic Any recommendations to raise front end ? in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 2 months ago
I think the cheapest and simplist way to go if you are looking for that is to buy another set of tires. Go back to the 145’s that were on there in the first place. Or go to a 165-45 or 50 series tire. Just a thought. Mid America Motorworks sells them.

There is one on the car but not sure of the condition. I have a new one to install but haven’t gotten to it yet. I’m having the wheels balanced on the car Friday which need to be done anyway. The guy feels sure it’s an our of round tire by the symptoms. We’ll see. I’ll try to swap out the dampner this weekend as well. Can’t hurt especially since I…[Read more]

How about air shocks? It could stiffen suspension some depending on how much air you have to put in them but it could be just enough to get the job done and not suffer any ride comfort or safety. Cheaper than an adjustable beam and a lot less work. Just a thought.
Just curious why you went with a taller tire? -
