John Simion replied to the topic Throttle cable in the forum TD Replicas 8 years, 6 months ago
Picture would help. On my car the cable passes through a 1/4″ aluminum sleeve about 2″ long, and is secured with a screw through that. The sleeve then attaches to the carb with a ball joint, and thus the whole sleeve moves when you press the accelerator.. I would think NAPA should be able to get you a similar setup.

Re “I believe the Fusseneggers stretched the hood a little in order to get a better fit of the body over the VW donor: it lets the BCW’s full length grill sit in front of the front axle beam and allows the rear torsion bar to tuck behind the front of the rear fenders.” Not just BCW. My FiberFab meets both criteria. I think my FF is a little…[Read more]

You have an original with beautiful and expensive wire wheels. The original will also hold its value better. No offense to the replica, but the original is a pretty easy choice.

After 2-1/2 years of ownership, I know nothing about my car EXCEPT that I did successfully install a RetroSound radio, speaker enclosures, and speakers, and I did get everything to work. Having said that, I would NEVER in a million years recommend ANY of those products. They are absolutely AWFUL. The radio is the best of the bunch — it’s “o…[Read more]

If you move the bottom of the seat back forward a few inches to line up with the bases, you’d have something really great. If they are installed exactly like the picture, you and your passenger are going to suffer baaaaad back problems.

FYI, my friend has now decided that the problem lies in the “non-MSD” coil. He told me to replace the distributor cap, rotor, AND put in the MSD coil that is made for the system. The stock coil came with the car when I bought it, and for all I know it came with the original donor car in 1979. Regardless, he believes that the stock coil may ei…[Read more]

I have now had my car home long enough to work on it some. I had a friend come visit and he’s a mechanic, so he’s been helping me. First he fixed the throttle linkage that was bollixed up by the “professional”, who simply attached it backwards and to the wrong hole — it couldn’t return all the way back to idle. The revised linkage co…[Read more]

My car is Murphy after the well-known Murphy’s Law, so I have that name copyrighted. Actually, a friend fixed my steering column/turn signal problem, fixed my idle problem, and will tighten the alternator belt and try to fix my squeaky brakes tomorrow. All these things were done improperly by the high-priced, supposedly expert VW mechanic. One…[Read more]

FYI, my own TDr failed to sell on eBay. High bid was $5000, which didn’t meet the reserve. The reserve wasn’t even much more than that, but a miss is as good as a mile.

My own car has been listed on Craigslist and eBay for a week now:
My own car is pretty nice, too, but I’ve had NO calls through Craigslist, and with 3 days to go, I have received a whopping three (3) bids totaling $4605 through eBay,… -

As much as I love you guys (figuratively!), I will be heading off into the sunset. Here’s why:
1) Original VW mechanic overcharged and wasted months of time, and didn’t do a number of things right;2) Body shop held onto my car for six months before they did anything … finally got it back and the doors wouldn’t close properly and the chrome on… -

Well, I am somewhat embarrassed. I would have preferred a large piece of solid walnut or mahogany, but could not find one large enough, even on eBay. I just used 7/16″ walnut plywood that I got from Home Depot online, and reinforced it on the back. I sealed it well and then put a 7/16″ plastic chrome strip on the top. I am happy with the…[Read more]

John Simion replied to the topic Hows about a West Coast meet? in the forum General Discussion 8 years, 8 months ago
The problem for me is the vast distance in the west. SoCal is the closest metro area to us, but Vegas is still 300 miles away. Doug’s Garage and I are the only TDr’s that I know of in this area. I’m not about to drive Murphy 300 miles one-way to the event — assuming Murphy is even finished by then. Right now the estimated completion time is… -

You shouldn’t have worked so hard to get it cleaned up and ready for sale. Dusting is extremely time consuming.

John Simion replied to the topic empi front disc brake kit in the forum General Discussion 8 years, 9 months ago
I have the EMPI front discs and the narrowed front beam. The mechanic told me that it was narrowed to the max, but I don’t know how much that is/was. Certainly never indicated that the discs would widen anything, and it’s much narrower now than it was pre-anything. It makes a nice realistic stance, but I use 165/15 tires on OEM 4.5 VW wheels…[Read more]

Maybe what I have is POR-15. Dunno. Gotta be at least 30 years old and still strong, whether it’s fiberglass or POR-15. But I sure wouldn’t think of it as a Band-Aid.

Kent’s rust problem reminded me of a question I had, and maybe a solution for him. I have never seen floorboard rust on my car, although frankly I haven’t looked that hard by rolling around underneath it. However, the builder of my car made it a moot point anyway, because he fiberglassed in the entire floor. He even used fiberglass cloth, so it…[Read more]
