Just my opinion. If it’s in the car, get new plugs and wires, new points, condenser, test the coil to make sure it’s good, drain and fill the pan with thick “high mileage” oil (20-50?), douse the carb with something the gaskets might like–carb cleaner, say–and spray some wd40 around the inside cylinder walls through the plug holes before turning…[Read more]

Rich! Glad you’re OK. Really sorry to hear about Ally. I vote for a rebuild–or go find that guy with the barn full of old VW motors you mentioned a few months back. Haul his junk home. Mix & match.Somehow I just don’t see you dropping $3-$4k on a crate motor. Where’s the fun there?

TD replicas: they separate the hard-asses from the, uh, other guys.

Bridget’s just foam. Looks original. Still good, 30 years and 35,000 miles later.

The original cars mounted the spare on a tube steel frame that bolted over the gas tank. They also had the license plate mounting bracket built in. These frames come available on ebay about once a month. Might be adaptable if you, the builder, are also adaptable. (The BCW cars have a somewhat wider version of these that swing away to provide…[Read more]

edward ericson replied to the topic Shifter Height in the forum VW Based Kits 14 years, 10 months ago
Naw. It’s beautiful. Feels like a stock one, position-wise, and would look stock too if the tunnel in front of the shifter were like 2 or three inches taller. Look at the interior of a TD and you’ll see what I mean. If you hate it you can always cut down the shifter.

Mike, that is very nice work. Larry–I had that exact trouble two weeks ago with the frosty. The Wendy’s dude handed it to me and I looked at it, then back at him, and asked for one of those 4-place trays. He ended up putting the whole Frosty cup into a much bigger cup with a lid. I even saw his manager berating him, dude kind of pointed with his…[Read more]

Reliable as any other ’69 or ’73 VW Bug. Which is to say, pretty much so. I take mine to work about once or twice a week–about 20 miles each way–when the weather is fine. It is da bomb! I get thumbs up from people on every trip; everyone likes the car–from the suburban soccer mom to the cop directing traffic to the shamblin’ dudes hanging on…[Read more]

edward ericson replied to the topic custom pedals? in the forum VW Based Kits 14 years, 10 months ago
You’re right, Paul. Looking at the assembly manual, there is no sign of any modded pedals or need for them. The photo is of standard pedals–taller and narrower. Could be the builder installed them too close to the firewall and had to pull them and bend them like that. Could even be the owner of the donar car did it, perhaps to accomodate 16 EEEs,…[Read more]

I hesitate to contradict Paul, who knows more than me about almost everything; and I hate to discourage a budding brother. But. If I were you, I’d move to the best place I could, go to law school, graduate, pass the bar, get employed and then buy the MG. You’re probably not going to have a lot of time to tinker with this thing, and depending on it…[Read more]
