Glad to hear you got yours ready for welding Allen. A Tig job would look sweet, but a steady hand on a Mig would be fine too. I have recently picked up a wicker picnic basket I plan to strap on to my rack. How do you plan to finish yours? Paint, powder coat or chrome?

Just send me a pm with your email guys and I would be happy to send you a copy.  I am not sure if the moderators have a way of posting a downloadable pdf. file on this site, but if they have interest I could send it to them. I have sent a few of these drawings to members, but have not heard any feedback as to the rack being easily constructed in…[Read more]

  • Allen,
my CMC/Fiberfab has the same setup you describe. The original builder did not cut the slots in the spare tire mount, nor did I. I am not having a heat problem without the slots cut even on a hot 100 degree southern day. My engine oil temp maxes at about 205. It seems there is enough airflow, that upper compartment heat build up is not a…[Read more]

Glad everything worked out for you Ed. The access hole you put in was a good idea and should have been in the original design, but compared to some of the things Detroit has done it was a minor design flaw. I was a little worried about the rear axel nuts when I did my brakes too, but they came loose easier than I thought they would. Seems they…[Read more]

Ed I just looked at your car in your gallery and from what I can see in your under the hood pic, it looks a lot like my CMC. My battery sits in front of the gas tank in its on molded tub that can be removed from the main part that holds the tank. On mine thats where you get access to the master cylinder bolts (remember the inner spacers). The nu…[Read more]

. Anyone done a master on theirs? How the heck do you get to it?[/QUOTE]
Ed Im not sure how the BCW is set up. I just put a master cylinder on my CMC/Fiberfab and you can get access by removing the battery box. Remember that there are spacers inside the napolean hat and if you pull the master cylinder bolts out the spacers will drop down and you…[Read more]

Ed what you say makes perfect sense. I also was thinking what the previous owner thought was low oil pressure may not be. Over at the Samba the general rule of thumb for stock VW oil pressure is 10 psi per 1000 rpm. Roughly 10 psi at idle and 10 psi for every additional 1000 rpm. The readings are taken on a warm engine temp. , not at start up. On…[Read more]

    Hi Buddy,
that 1600 will push your TD  faster than you might think. The 1776 would be nice for sure. You are right to stay away from GEX. I have heard many horror stories about them. I have heard good and bad about MOFOCO, but way more of the + comments. You might do a search on the Samba forum for builders. Most of them will suggest doing the…[Read more]

  • Mike replied to the topic Seat Cushions in the forum VW Based Kits 14 years, 11 months ago

I have been pondering the seat question for awhile myself. For a lazy mans solution, I put a stadium seat cushion between me and the seat for an over 30 mile drive (may not be purty, but it helps). I have thought about cutting out the middle section of the seat board leaving about 2″ around the edges. Then taking some chair webbing like the…[Read more]

  • It is funny that this  just came up. I had been wondering about the decals too. What I did was get some brass knobs taped 10-24 like my switch stems from Mcmaster Carr and stamp them with 1/4 tall letter stamps. L for lights, W for wiper, ect. I then took a black sharpie and filled in the stamp area and buffed off the front of the knob to make th…[Read more]

    PGA,
I checked the tire mounting on my car and it was like I had thought. A flat bar under the cover with two studs coming thru the cover that the spare goes on. The spare is secured with lugnuts.  The tire is centered by a section of the cover that has been molded to fit. I also checked the distance of the bottom of steering wheel to back of…[Read more]

PGA..if you look in the manual download under  VW CMC Fiberfab page 39 you can see how CMC did it. They have a raised portion on the engine cover that fits inside the rim. Then they have a flat bar with two studs drilled thru the cover that the wheel mounts to with lug nuts. If i remember correctly the steel bar is about 3/8 thich by 1 1/2 wide. I…[Read more]

Pga64..I noticed your shifter is about 3 to 4″ in front of the seats where mine is about flush. That answers the question about if the vw based TDs would have a universal fit. It looks like everyone would use a little different dimensions in building something like this. I really like your console. I wish I would have more room to add a…[Read more]

Thanks for the compliments guys. I have had this car for five years and had been meaning to do something. It was an easy project even for someone with amateur woodworking skills like myself. Newkitman..when i bought my car already assembled someone had put an empi trigger shift in it. The shifter was the tall one , 15″ I think is the designation. I hated it and put the empi 12″ trigger shift in it. I would think the stock VW shifter would be fine.

Paul I am really confused as to why there is so little throttle room. My assembly bolts directly to the tunnel as it should and is solid with no play or slack. I looked at the photo in the link you posted and one at CIP1 shown here http://www2.cip1.com/PhotoGallery.asp?ProductCode=VWC%2D113% 2D798%2D071%2DC

Paul…. after reading your post and looking at my photos I thought to myself it sure looks bent to the right. I went out in the garage and checked. My brake pedal is straight and square to the floor. Is the brake lever supposed to be straight or does OEM have a slight bend to the left? The photo is an optical illusion. I didnt have a dead on…[Read more]
