Phil replied to the topic Need advice on ride height in the forum VW Based Kits 12 years, 3 months ago
Had a little issue last night on the freeway.– The end of the left front spindle broke off. So a question since I have the front end apart can I get away with removing any of the torsion leaves to soften the ride if I have cut and turned the tube during construction as per the instruction manual. (This site did not exist when I was doing the…[Read more]

I got my wipers to park correctly by inserting a diode into the park circuit of the motor.

I bought the older style — it required a whole lot less work to remove the seat tracks.

Measure 5 times cut once.
Measure 5 times tack weld — measure again and complete your weld. I had a professional do the welding — you do not want that weld to fail when you hit a bump in the road.
I did all the before measuring in my garage and then cut off the old one then took it to the shop — the guy was great and let me have the use of…[Read more] -
Phil replied to the topic Bumper Question in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 3 months ago
Mine are installed — good thing too because within 6 weeks of putting it on the road a lady backed into me and only bent the bumper support bracket. I am sure that that light bump would have put a dent in that brand new 25 year old bumper if the back bar was not installed.

Phil replied to the topic Brake Sticking in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 3 months ago
Did you install new brake lines — the flexible ones that attatch to the wheel cylinders? Old ones will eventually collapse inside and prevent the brake fluid from escaping from the wheel cylinder when you release the brake pedal. It will only seep out slowly.

I saw one of those at a swap meet and I am pretty sure it is too tall to fit under the TD hood.

Phil replied to the topic need wiring help in the forum VW Based Kits 14 years, 2 months ago
You need a heavy gauge battery cable wire from the battery positive terminal to the starter and another one from the negative terminal to chassis ground. I believe it is a # 3 or 4 gauge wire. I think it is mentioned in the text of the manual.

Deja Vu — those photos take me back to eight years ago when I purchased my unfinished kit.
My driveway looked just like that after we unloaded the trailer.

I have a suggestion — since you have it stripped down to the pan you should move that e-brake lever back to between the seats. It makes it look better and is much more practical.

I finished to car in just less than 3 years –it took lots of time to get the donor car parts the way I wanted them. Had to get a new frame head, new floor pans, sand blasted and painted the whole frame, front disc brakes also moved the e-brake lever to between the seats.

I bought my unfinished kit without donor car and had no problem bringing it into Canada as car parts. Just make sure that the kit was manufactured over 15 years ago and it has all the paperwork.
I used to have a neighbor who figured out how to still import cobra kits — I believe he used several shipments of car parts.

Phil replied to the topic VW alternator in the forum VW Based Kits 15 years, 2 months ago
My second car was a 74 beetle and it had an alternator with external regulator as does my mgtd.
I don’t know for sure but the way to tell if it has an internal or external regulator may be by the number of terminals in the connector on top of the alternator.
If it is the original alternator it likely has an external regulator. I think that all o…[Read more] -

Phil replied to the topic polishing gel coat in the forum General Discussion 16 years, 8 months ago
You have to use a cut polish.
First use a 1000 grit followed by a 2000 or 2500 grit.
Then put two or three coats of wax on it.

You are probably best to make your own patterns out of cardboard. They are not that hard to make. I doubt that mine are still around. We have just moved and there is only a slight chance that they are tucked in a corner somewhere.
